I've stopped putting any parts of potato in my compost bin because they sprout so easily. Personally I'd try and get the whole lot out Barbara.

if i take them out i dont have any-where to put them, we're not allowed to put them in the bins, and i dont have the green bin because i compost. do you think they will rot down eventually.?

You aren't allowed to put potato bits into a household bin? Goodness gracious me!
If they are growing Barbara they won't rot down I'm afraid - they will just feed off the goodness of your compost. If you can't put them in the bin then I suggest that you take them down to your local tip and put them into the green waste section.

Hi Barbara .... I found a load of green leaves growing out of the bottom compost bin hatch a few days ago - turned out a potato had sprouted. I figured it deserved an 'A' for effort, so have planted it in a bucket - no idea how it will turn out! Cheers ...

Thinking of ordering one to help shift the huge heap that is growing daily. Does anyone use one of these and have any recommendations

good morning J, I wouldn't recommend compost tumblers myself, because I had to work with them when i looked afer a big walled garden for someone else. They become dreadfully heavy, so unless you are very strong, or have someone to help you, I think you would find them difficult. This question was asked on the BBC board, and all the messages in reply said the same thing. I have the dalek type of composter from the council, they cost a mere five pounds up here, and I find they make beautiful compost, and I never turn it. I have six of them. As an aside, I use old wheelie bins as water butts, which came for free from the council. I made holes in the lids to allow the downpipes from my greenhouse to drain into them.

I have just purchased one - the prices here start at £8.00 for smallest £10.00 for middle size - which is quite large

Thanks for the info WT, I have a couple of black daleks at home and a huge heap too. I think the weather is to blame this year as its all taking a lot longer than I would like. I was looking a a 200l tumbler to speed up the process.

I tend to leave my compost for a year, same as the leaf mold, but a tumbler would make it quicker. I don't have a big strong man available, that is the problem. Why not try one? Even if you cannot tumble it, it will still work.

... come on, show us your compost! The bag to the side is an 80l bag and I reckon there is 3 more bags worth in the box!! Plus, quite a bit of the bigger stuff was chucked straight onto the borders. I'm going to use the stuff above in my new greenhouse borders!!! ;D That's when it goes up of course.

Horse sh........ er poo! ;D There's about 5 bags of it in there which was added at the beginning oh and an extra one about 6 months ago to give it a boost. Other than that, just normal kitchen stuff, grass and all my carboard that comes as produce packaging and the inside of kitchen rolls and wrapping paper.
That lot has been cooking for a year and a half and I've only been adding grass for the last 3 months. I also turn it. probably about once a month.
Usually on the 15th..........................
Not really!!! ;D

I know it's not the 15th , but I turned this and about 6 other trug fulls out of one of the compost bins and spread all about the border I hacked about decided needed a revamp ;D No Horse Poo, just kitchen waste, spent compost, grass cuttings and the occasional 'special watering' from the OH
