Hi Mr G - have you got any pics perhaps??
I don't have a Magnolia but one thing that perhaps comes to mind is scorching.
We have all had a lot of heat lately and I have seen here in Germany that there are some trees that are losing their leaves even. It was too hot, no rain and the trees are compensating perhaps for that by shedding leaves.
I hope that someone can help you better.

Is it in full sun Mr G, or partial shade? It was hot last week, even I wilted I know they are prone to wind damage, is it in a sheltered spot, or could it have got a beating from this weeks stormy conditions? I think they are quite tough plants once established. I've been and checked my 'Susan' just to see, the leaves are a bit pale but no damage, and it is almost in full sun, but a bit sheltered from the winds x Tig

Hi,
Its in a full sun site, so a bit open. The whole plant looks a bit yellowy.
If its planted in a non acid soil, then could this be effecting it ?

Ive fed it with Acid loving feed over the past 2 weeks but im confused. Magnolia's are plentyfull around here aswell as rhodo's and other acid loving plants, so i assumed mine would be ok. In every road for miles around these plants thrive.
Im confused.

I wonder if that is what is wrong then Mr G! I have my stellata in normal to clay soil and Ive never fed it on mira acid or anything like it apart from what it can grab from my scattered chicken pellets!! maybe its the hot weather as well Id just keep it well watered and dont feed it although sequestrion of iron can only do it good I water my rhoda,s with it over their leaves.

MssK's Magnolia was in deep trouble last year and it got worse over winter and this Spring. I left one healthy main shoot standing and cut back i.e. at ground level over two third of the plant. It seems to like it. It now has more roots for less plant and has begun making new shoots at ground level. I never found a simple answer as to why it lost its leaves and why some leaves got so small. I can't remember if it yellowed last year but as it lost lots of leaves it must have. As said it is now much more healthy. Before it was only healthy looking up to one meter high and all above was in trouble. I suppose it might have been a water problem. We are on clay soil but with peat remains underneath. Groundwater level sits at app minus 2 meter which is pretty high and rots away roots that go deeper.

No it doesnt does it . It seems to look worse this year. I bought this as a small plant and it had grown really well and bushed out over the past three years, so im not sure about soil conditions being wrong. I mulched it with Ericacious in May and ive been feeding it on and off through the summer with acid loving food but it doesnt seem to have done any good. I have noticed that towards the middle of summer from June time, the leaves go a little yellow and not the vibrant green of when they first emerge, this year seems a lot worse with some browning leaves and some ends of the branches dying. One thing that did happen this hear which hasnt been happening before is that i lost all my flowers on the plant bar one, they were forming then just turned brown and died off. Im confused. G

Ive been thinking and researching this plant.
1. It cant be the aspect. All references say in likes sunny sites and can handle sun. This is the position its in. 2. Soil - It states it can handle a neutral PH but likes Acid. Well i feed it and mulch the Ericacious every year. The soil i think is Acid as there are lots of magnolia, rhodo's and others in the area. 3. Drought - Cant be that. This July has been wet. And the last couple of years have been wet also.
Other possibles: Poor Drainage. Could be an issue. My Buddleija leaves yellow a bit also, could this indicate poor drainage ? I thought they grew every where in any condition, no problem. Disease - Does rust effect Magnolia ? I have a rust problem at the moment on my roses and Rhodo ?
