"An outbreak of swine flu in 1976 infected 200 people in the US. Only one of them died, but a vaccine administered to 40m people killed 25 and led to 500 others developing Guillain-Barre syndrome, which can be fatal." news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/health/8024240.stmIsn't it time we stopped panicking and got on with our lives?

I am with you on that Dr. Bill--"Swine Flu" is probally no worse than we get most years (with the Flu Bug) -which I know isn't very nice when you get it but I am sure there is no need to panic- Using a Hanky or Tissue and Washing your hands is more effective in containing the Bug--Bigs-

I must admit to feeling a little overwhelmed by all the media and government hype about it. But my daughter and her OH have been in Nevada on holiday - and I couldn't help but worry about them x Tig

I totally agree Dr Bill, and whilst not wishing to appear totally blasé, I really cannot be bothered with all the hype and wall to wall media coverage of what is looking increasingly like an extreme over-reaction to the recent events in Mexico. By all accounts the number of Mexican deaths directly attributable to the so called swine flu (which has no connection whatsoever to pigs! ) has now been revised down to twelve. Never was it truer to say that you have more chance of being hit by a bus. ;D So I will be carrying on as usual and will stick to my father's adage..."When your number is up that's it, there's no point worrying about it in advance." i221.photobucket.com/albums/dd161/GWDAdmin1/Smilies/Default/wink.gif

I expect more people die of malaria in half an hour than will be killed in total by this "pandemic". Those that have it in this country have been reported as having "mild flu symptoms" and all are recovering after treatment with readily available medicines.
It's total overkill and scaremongering by the media and completely OTT.

Agree and I feel really sorry for anyone suffering from hayfever this year as I am sure sneezing in public is going to set off all those that are worrying about it because of the media coverage...

Perhaps if 'flu' off NO ;D As they are now suggesting that this latest 'pandemic' might have peaked ... I note today some 'expert' reporting that we must not get complacent, because it will probably come back and bite us in the bum during Autumn/Winter Sometimes they just can't admit they got it wrong ... but still better safe than sorry I suppose x Tig

It's getting to be a bit like the boy who cried wolf........sars..bird flu..swine flu... We need to be aware, and take precautions, but there has been complete overkill. I'm still waiting for the Millennium Bug!! ;D ;D

All my schools are full of hastily provided posters on how to blow your nose and sneeze correctly. Don't know what the 4 and 5 year olds make of it.

A little girl at my grandchildrens school has swine flu, it's causing a family row, as, son in law wants to keep kids at home out of danger, and daughter wants to send them to school as usual. not an easy decision.

I work as carer and already the management have drafted forms that we have been asked to fill in and to give the maximum hours that we would be willing to work in an emergency. One tenant has already said that if we get a case of flu in the complex he isn't going to open the door to us and everything will have to be left outside for him to take in.

I have been told it is in all the schools in our area. If I'm going to get it I will, not staying in nor am I worrying about it .. just keep washing hands thoroughly and trying to duck if someone sneezes or coughs without using a hanky.

The girls at work tell me there are memo's on a weekly basis about Swine Flu and everyone has been given update training about how to deal with an outbreak in our area.

2 of the sons of one of my colleagues have had swine flu. She had similar symptoms on Wednesday but dismissed it as a "head cold" and came into work How bloody dim do you have to be ? Another of the ladies (who sit opposite the one with the symptoms) has also now gone down with similar symptoms but we haven't yet had either case officially confirmed as swine flu. However, I'm sitting here with a bit of a sore throat and feeling on the warm side so maybe I've now bloody got it as well FA x

our line manager at the complex where I work informed us that if we were well enough to pick up a £50 note we were well enough to come into work. Well, I could be half dead and still manage that. I think she may have been joking, then again???

My penfriend - who lives in California - said they teach children to cough or sneeze into the crook of their elbow so that germs don't get on their hands

When I went to the docs the other week they had a designated Anti-viral pick-up area with two security men on the door at the surgery! I can think of better ways to spend NHS resources. They must have been expecting mass hysteria, either that or the tamiflu was packaged in diamond encrusted boxes x Tig

My own GP's surgery have removed all magazines and childrens' toys from the waiting area "To help prevent the spread of Swine Flu". However, they have no fears about keeping the WC locked and requiring those in need to request the key from reception. Fortunately sanity remains intact at the blood test clinic and indeed at the hospital where anyone with an interest in old magazine articles won't be disappointed. i221.photobucket.com/albums/dd161/GWDAdmin1/Smilies/Default/grin.gif

My OH and I had our normal flu jabs nearly 3 weeks ago and have just had the Schweine Flu jabs a couple of hours ago.
My arm is still attached and no side effects whatsoever up to now.

Rf I'm happy that it seems you had no ill effects from the vaccine. Has anyone else had the vaccine or been called to have it and decided not to? I wonder because I've been called to have it in the morning due to the treatment I take and wondered whether anyone had any stories about it.

Due to my OH having to have an injection, I had to have one.
Yesterday the doctors rang and my OH has go to have another - a booster basically.
I have had no side affects whatsoever, nor has my OH.

Thanks Rf, I thought I'd wait until I'd had it to answer your post, it's really good to know you and your Husband did'nt have any side effects. I'm happy to say I had it this morning and my arm is fine so far. All the Dr's at my surgery have had it too. I have to go have another as well , seems that some immune systems may not make enough antibodies due to illness or medications or something and having one injection will only give about 75per cent immunity. The idea is to give another injection 3 weeks or so later in order to give more immunity.

We have just had a call from the surgery and my OH was supposed to go tomorrow for another schweine flu shot. They now say that this isn't necessary and the first shot gives 100% protection, irrespective of medication and age.
Perhaps you could ask about your second shot LG??
