Just got this from a contact in BT
Hi Foz,
Can you circulate this around especially as Xmas is fast approaching - it has been confirmed by Royal Mail. The Trading Standards Office are making people aware of the following
A card is posted through your door from a company called PDS (Parcel Delivery Service) suggesting that they were unable to deliver a parcel and that you need to contact them on 0906 6611911 (a Premium rate number).
DO NOT call this number, as this is a mail scam originating from Belize.
If you call the number and you start to hear a recorded message you will already have been billed £315 for the phone call.
If you do receive a card with these details, then please contact Royal Mail Fraud on 020 7239 6655.

How can you be billed £315 from BT just for dialing a number, regardless of how long you are on the line? This may be a scam, but surely BT are at fault for making this possible.

BT will just say you are responsible for any calls made from your line, they just provide the line. We found this out to our cost years ago when someone set up a scam through the internet that logged you onto a premium line.

I seem to think that BT's call barring service can prevent calls to premium rate numbers but that would include the likes of X-Factor voting lines too.

Quite so, and I hasten to add that I don't watch the X-Factor! Moving back on topic I have a feeling that it's all or nothing with BT so you can't pick and choose - of course I may be wrong.

I think this is an old one, Fozzie, & has now been dealt with - www.snopes.com/fraud/telephone/pds.asp (scroll down for statement by phone company), though the original email which went round in 2005/06 said £15, not £315! It was a real scam (though not quite as bad a one as the email made out) but is no longer operating. It is, however, exactly the sort of scam which some enterprising crooks are likely to take up again, so it's always advisable to be aware that parcel delivery cards might not be genuine.
