As some of you may know I have been waiting since September for an operation to fuse the bones in my big toe (Too many years kicking footballs and the occasional little boy, as a Primary school teacher) The arthritis had reached the stage where one joint was indanger of collapsing and I have to admit it was pretty painful at times. Well yesterday they managed to fit me in (New Years Eve of all times!) I think the theatre was open for emergency ops and my surgeon had to be there so he booked me in. Well it was done at 9.30 am and I was home by 4.00 pm. Lucky really the chaps who arrived at the same time as I did were still sitting in the ward waiting when I left. So, now I am not allowed to put my toes on the ground for 6 weeks while the bone sets. I have to walk on my hel, awkward but possible, just. They prescribed pain killers, but to be honest I would prfer not to take them they are addictive, In any case, the pain so far is no worse than what it was before so I shall just ignore it. The one thing I was sweating on, (literally) was a cold. My wife picked up a real stinker about 2 weeks ago (over it now mostly) and I was praying that I would not show any symptoms. Yesterday ,not a sniffle, cough or a wheeze, Phew, wipes brow, Today? Man flu! I have to say that the people at the hospital (Gobowen Orthpaedic Hosptial) were wonderful, caring, considerate and very professional. Hats off to them. (And yes I did say Thank you to them!). So, now I am house bound for the nest 6 weeks and possibly longer depending on my healing properties. As the only driver and since we live 2 miles from a 'bus stop and 10 miles from a Supermarket we have stocked up on everything we can. It is going to be hard not going out in the garden or walking down the lane every day, but you takes what comes. Happy New Year everyone.

Hopefully the worst is now behind you OB and you will be back on your feet in no time (pardon the pun : . 6 weeks is not long, if you do as instructed and don't try any Morris dancing. Have you got crutches? You might manage to hobble about a bit, just take care if it is icy. You can always try your hand at drawing, or write some tales from the country Wishing you a speedy recovery x Tig

All the best for your recovery OB. This has to be the best 6 weeks to be laid up though. You'll be ready, willing and able to get on that garden come March!! You can order your groceries on line don't forget. After all we can't have you wasting your time can we? Got to think of some things you CAN do ;D

How great to have your op over and done with OB but what a shame you have the flu, especially since it's your Birthday . If you have to be off your feet at least things in the garden are quiet now. I was on crutches last year and know how difficult it is to keep that foot off the ground. It would be worth checking out if you can get Tesco or Asda to deliver to you, I do all the time and it's great. Hope you make a good recovery.

Wishing you a speedy recovery OB. I was going to suggest on-line supermarket shopping. I've been using Sainsburys since my car accident and even if I get back to being able to push a trolley I shall carry on using them - free delivery if you book mid-week. Make sure you get lots of rest.

None of the Supermarkets deliver here except Tescos and we refuse point blank to deal with them. It is not a problem we are used to stock piling for winter, we do get cut off now and then. There is enough food in the freezers and garden to last us until this time next year. It is only milk and banas we need to buy more often and our neightbour down the road will get them for us. A very quiet birth coming up. Hardest thing I have found so far is getting my trouser leg over the bandage on my foot. Good job I do not wear tight jeans!

Sainsburys don't deliver in my area either but Tesco and Asda do. It's good to know you have neighbours who can help out OB. Maybe an old pair of track suit bottoms might be easier to wear?

Speedy recovery OB and when the itch to go out gets too big just force yourself to go on here the first few weeks. After that surely a careful hobble outside should not harm.
