Scientist claimed today we are entering a cold mode which will probably last three decades. That will be your global warming then. I have felt like a voice in the wilderness most of the time. .

We are talking about this the other day. OH says that it's the changing planets generally and we will not only get hotter summers but colder winters. Joy!

OH thinks the same as you Barbara - the earth goes in cycles of cold periods.

Cooler summers AND cooler winters apparently.
Jas I'm sure it's all down to sun spots.but, I'm no scientist so what do I know.

I just don't know Barbara But the 'cooler summers' has been right for the past 3 years now hasn't it - although we had a really glorious Indian summer here.

It's "climate change" and just because the globe is warming, doesn't mean that we are. Statistically we will have a rise in MEAN AVERAGE temperature ( including winters and nights) but that will be countered by an increase in rainfall.....so....wetter and fractionally warmer - Cornish weather in fact ;D I'm ordering me flippers now!!!! ;D ;D

I'm not sure if any of the 'scientist' have got to grips with the unpredictability of the weather - there are so many influential factors, some caused by man and others by natural occurances. A volcano throws out billions of tons of gases into the atmosphere - I copied this from a scientific site " The most abundant gas typically released into the atmosphere from volcanic systems is water vapor (H20), followed by carbon dioxide (C02) and sulphur dioxide (S02). Volcanoes also release smaller amounts of others gases, including hydrogen sulphide (H2S), hydrogen (H2), carbon monoxide (CO), hydrogen chloride (HCL), hydrogen fluoride (HF), and helium (He)." Modelling the weather is notoriously difficult because there are so many influential factors which are beyond the means of man to change. All they can really do is give us their best guess ... I'll just stick my nose outside and see for myself x Tig

Don't confuse "global warming/climate change" with "weather".
As Auricula says, "global warming/climate change" means that we will statistically have a rise in the global average temperature. It has been predicted that a rise in the global average temperature of just 2 degrees will lead to much of the polar ice caps melting.
Changes in the weather are the effect (or possibly the cause) of climate change.
I am wholeheartedly in agreement that the climate is changing. It's been obvious over my lifetime that Winters are milder, with less snow etc but I am still not entirely convinced that it is man-made. The Earth has always had periods of cooling and warming (technically we're still in an ice age as we still have permanent ice at the poles) and it could be that we are just seeing a natural phenomenon that is only causing concern because in previous times, we lacked the knowledge or equipment to measure it.
I'm also not convinced about this "carbon footprint" malarky. For a start, we as a nation produce 2% of the world's carbon emissions. If you take from that all the industry, transport, aviation etc and then divide the rest by all of us, each one of us is personally responsible for the merest tiniest miniscule fraction of the world's carbon emissions. So things like switching off the telly rather than leaving it on standby etc will not make the slightest bit of difference overall. In my opinion, the Government has jumped on the "carbon" bandwaggon as an excuse to hit the general law abiding (but mostly silent) majority in the pocket.
It's also a multi-billion pound industry. You're not going to get a bunch of scientists stating that "oh yes, the world is warming naturally" because then there goes all their funding !! "Climate change" appears to be the current "buzz phrase" amongst the politicians and media but whatever happened to the "hole in the ozone layer" or the "new ice age" ?
I also read some very interesting stuff which put forward the argument that actually it's not carbon we should be worrying about but methane and water vapour, both of which are more abundant than carbon and both of which are worse greenhouse gasses, apparently.
Anyway, if Climate Change and Global Warming are man made and are as a result of pollution/carbon emissions, there is bugger all we can do about it unless the Goverments of the world's largest polluters (China, India & The USA) get their fingers out and agree to massively reduce their greenhouse gas emissions. If they don't, we're all screwed !

AHHH your not listening to me, climate change is COOLING the earth for the next 30 years. It must be true the scientist who said it was all WARMING up, is now sayingit's COOLING down. And the ice caps have thickened in the last 2 years, go read the article in todays mail online.

Last updated at 9:32 AM on 11th January 2010 * Comments (117) * Add to My Stories Britain's big freeze is the start of a worldwide trend towards colder weather that seriously challenges global warming theories, eminent scientists claimed yesterday. The world has entered a 'cold mode' which is likely to bring a global dip in temperatures which will last for 20 to 30 years, they say. Summers and winters will all be cooler than in recent years, and the changes will mean that global warming will be 'paused' or even reversed, it was claimed. Cyclists ride through the snow in Richmond Park Big chill: Scientists have claimed that the world has entered a 'cold mode' which could last three decades, a theory that challenges climate change The predictions are based on an analysis of natural cycles in water temperatures in the Pacific and Atlantic oceans. They are the work of respected climate scientists and not those routinely dismissed by environmentalists as 'global warming deniers'. Some experts believe these cycles - and not human pollution - can explain all the major changes in world temperatures in the 20th century. OH told me that yesterday a radio station (probably Radio 4 knowing my OH) was asking people to suggest a phrase or term for the weather we were having. Apparently the majority phoned in and said "WINTER" ;D ;D ;D

Ah yes, Winter. This winter has not been as cold as 1963, nor as long-winded as 1947. Then we had 4 and a half feet of snow (or 1.5 metres for younger members). I remember my Dad opening the door and being confronted by a solid wall of snow - a drift up against the door. I also remember great fun in making tunnels through the snow, and the magic of Jack Frost's patterns on the window, albeit inside! No-one had central heating then. Everyone still had the community wartime blitz spirit and all pulled together, including the Council workers - no 'elf-n-safety' nambypambyism then. i221.photobucket.com/albums/dd161/GWDAdmin1/Smilies/Default/smiley.gif Console yourselves that it is bad for garden bugs and good for gardeners. We shall have bounteous flowers and heavy crops. i221.photobucket.com/albums/dd161/GWDAdmin1/Smilies/Default/wink.gif
