Does anyone here do volunteer work, and if so what do you do? I've just put my name down to help with reading at LP's school. They have a couple of schemes: reading groups in Year 6 to encourage the children to think more about what they read, and to discuss the text: and individual reading sessions for children who struggle a bit with their reading. I'm starting next week for two mornings a week, helping individual readers. And I'm terrified!!!

You'll be fine Plocket - hope you had your CRB check I volunteered to be a laymember of the University Research Ethics Panel a few years ago, and I quite enjoy it. Very scary at first sitting in a room with a load of Professors but I am empowered by my independence on the panel and trying to ensure that all research proposals are scrutinised objectively and without bias. I would volunteer for other work as long as I had plenty of time for the garden. Oooh and I am a 'volunteer' on GWD as well ;D x Tig

I've filled the form in and the school are dealing with it ;D
Wow that sounds quite daunting Tig. How often do you have to do that?
;D

I used to sit on 6 panels per year which was very do-able. They have almost doubled to 11 taking place this year though as the Sciences Faculty have more psychology graduates going through and they do quite complex research proposals. Most of the students opt to attend the panel and have direct feedback so that they can make amendments and resubmit without lengthy delays. It helps keep my brain ticking over

That sounds really interesting Tig. I am on the PTA at the boys' new school. I am sitting at the back very quietly at the moment and not admitting to having been Chair of the PTA at their old school ;D. I am also a Foundation Govenor at the boys' old school but cannot hold an office such as Chair or Vice as I am also employed at the school. I sit on the Statement Panel for the County too where decisions are made as to whether children should receive extra funding because of a Special Need. I tend to do this once a new term - or 6 times a year.

Hi Plocket - OH and I volunteer garden at a National Trust garden, as even though I'm retired from horticulture I can still be useful, and OH has learned by martial osmosis to such a degree that he can now surprise me by naming plants. i221.photobucket.com/albums/dd161/GWDAdmin1/Smilies/Default/cheesy.gif We are part of a great team of professionals from all walks of life who are now retired, but are experienced hobby gardeners. We also get lots of fresh air and exercise and find it more productive than a gym.

I am a volunteer at my local hospice. I do a regular half day a week and then fill in other shifts, if I can,to help out when people are away. The work is very varied. My regular slot is on reception - phone, visitors, messages, post etc but I also cover on the ward - taking meals, teas, changing flowers, water etc. We also talk to the patients and their visitors whenever, and for however long they want to talk and help out in any way we can. There is a super atmosphere and it is not a sad place at all ( well, obviously it has its moments). I have been there for 6 years and really enjoy it. I'm also on the committee of our local hardy plants society but that's not very onerous.

Hia Yakram! Yes I remember your volunteering - Margi introduced me to you and your husband. How is your lovely greenhouse doing? And your pineapples? This volunteering is very varied isn't it? I can't help thinking that all these places benefit so much, as well as those doing the volunteering.

I always admire the folk who give up their time for the Scouting movement. The boys go to a Scout Christmas service where they also give out leaders' awards and it is amazing how many people give up their time to keep the organisation going. I suppose we volunteer for the things we enjoy and that's what keeps lots of organisations going.

My God-Mother used to visit old people by taking them library books - she would ask what sort of books they liked and then take them along - pick up the read ones and take back to the library I used to go along with her when a little girl My Aunty had no car so was all done on foot and the books were heavy Then in later life I thought I would like to offer my services on a similar vein I went along to a meeting and didnt take it any further i221.photobucket.com/albums/dd161/GWDAdmin1/Smilies/Default/sad.gif Health and Safety rules were IMO ridiculous We had to go in pairs We could not stay more than 30 mins We could not fill their kettle; change a light bulb We could not ask them what they liked to read - just take the books and hope for the best We can take the same books every week - they may not notice I was told How sad - as an avid reader I would have been able to help them choose and gladly fill their kettles and change a light bulb I also had to collect the books at 7.30am in the morning b 4 the library opened to the public - had to get all the books into my car within 30 mins and insure my car for this purpose What a dreadful palarver - I only want to take library books to old people Sorry to rant i221.photobucket.com/albums/dd161/GWDAdmin1/Smilies/Default/cry.gif

I'm the treasurer for our bowling society, and I do the gardens around the bowling green, without volunteers lots of places would struggle, in our bowls hut is a poem about bones,( ie jaw bones talk a lot but do nothing ;D) I will try to copy it when I go to the next meeting.

I don't really do volunteer work as such but am always called upon to help with the trips at school...as I am CRB checked anyway and work at the school most of the kids have seen me about so when they are short of parent helpers I get asked. I don't get paid for it but I quite enjoy them, my favourite is the GC trip..I do it two days running ;D
