I just wondered if anyone had noticed any ill effects or otherwise - apart from the flight cancellations - following on from the continuing eruption of the Eyjafjallajokull volcano in Iceland?
First thing this morning there was a distinct smell of burning rubber in the air here and this has happened again this evening. I was expecting a hydrogen sulphide (rotten eggs) odour but it is not like that at all at least as far as my recollection of school chemistry lessons goes. Then again sulphur is used in the vulcanisation of rubber so perhaps there is a link to what we noticed earlier.
Also, my dad said that he saw a lot of dust on the ground near the local filling station but we haven't noticed anything else along those lines. Similarly we have yet to see any sign of the promised spectacular sunsets, although the clouds do have a generally grubby appearance.
So, what's it like in your neck of the woods?

Noticed nothing untoward. I looked for the promised "good" sunset, but saw nothing different from usual

The cars are covered in dust and the air seems dusty in a make you want to sneeze sort of way. We are also close to the Mayfield stack for Gatwick airport and the planes change of engine noise as they join the stack is very noticeable on cloud free days - it is very odd not hearing that.

Can't say I've noticed anything much round here. There is dust on my car but that's "general" dust, not from the volcano. I saw a thing on the news that said that if you got volcanic dust on your car, it would be grey which mine isn't. As for spectacular sunsets, nope nothing here either. It was a beautifuul sunset last night but nothing out of the ordinary. The positive side to all of this, as far as I'm concerned is that I live under the flightpath into Stansted airport. It's been lovely these last couple of days with no planes rumbling overhead (they go over at about 5000 feet usually) and the sky has been an incredible blue colour. It's usually white by lunchtime from all the vapour trails. I know it's bad for the country's economy and I'd be seriously pee'd off if I was going on holiday (as I am in about 6 weeks time ) but I do have to say that it's been absolutely lovely this weekend !! We've not noticed anything different and were watching for the so called "unusual" sunset - it didn't happen.

We're due to go away to Corfu for a week in 2 weeks time.....judging by some reports, it's about 50-50 whether we go at the moment Current weather forecasts say this high pressure and north/north easterly wind blowing down the east coast is here for the week

Everything crossed for you then mate. They are already talking about it being around for another 4 or 5 days but I understand that some airlines are planning to test fly through it to see what happens. It could be that flights resume, even if it's still there.
I'm due to fly to Majorca in about 6 weeks time so it's a bit of a worry for us too. At least we still have a few weeks for things to change.

KLM have sent a jet up apparently - some airline folk think it's all a complete over reaction. Don't think I would be wanting to test out any theories though.

BA were sending a flight from Heathrow to Cardiff tonight as a trial. An industry person on the news this morning said that there is no research available with regard to the different volumes of volcanic dust in the atmosphere but due to all the unknown risk factors they weren't willing to go against 'professional' advice because of legislative meltdown should something go wrong. I have had sore eyes for two days but that could just be pollen! There is a fine film of white dust on the car, but it has been windy so it could be normal road dust x Tig

No dust but OH still stuck abroad. Now Minsk is open but Amsterdam is still closed. With luck he can fly this afternoon but I fear the worst. There is a halo around the Sun which normally indicates ice particles at high altitude hence rain coming but it might be the ash doing it.

OH now due home on Wednesday. That is almost a week from when he left and he was only going to be away for two days. I hope he found a washing machine somewhere News from the Icelandic hot spot is that it now spews only 2 km into the sky instead of 10 km and is giving lava flow so hopefully things will settle down a bit. One aircraft spotted in the air today and now the clouds hide the halo. I still don't know if that was ash created.

Oh dear Dutchy. Hope he makes it home Weds as predicted. No signs here. There's dust on my car but I think that's because it's been dry. MY SISTER AND I ARE FLYING TO CYPRUS ON SATURDAY!!! I am confident and no point in worrying. The great thing is that the chap whose apartment we're renting (off the internet) has told me he will give me a FULL refund if we can't go! Who would believe that! He certainly is not legally obliged to. Plan B, see if we can get a ferry TO France (I know we wouldn't get one from France atm) and visit my other Sister instead) Plan C, check on't internet and book SC accom on the South coast somewhere. Plan D, come straight home! So I think I've got it covered

Sounds like it Ruthie. When you have other plans then you usually don't need them - it's when you haven't got a plan b that things seem to go wrong. Hope you get your OH home soon Dutchy. My friend's pilot husband is still stuck in Japan. At my schools we've got 1 member of staff and a few children stuck in various places.

supposed to have got worse in the night, spewing out more ash, but they are going to open up Scottish airspace. Dutchy I hope your OH found a launderette somewhere, when my son joined the RAF he used to come home once a fortnight with a bag of dirty washing Ruthie I think you have everything covered there, and by the way that lovely white primula you sent me is flowering it's socks off, thanks.

You are covered Ruthie ;D Flights to and from Amsterdam have started as there is air traffic making a noice overhead. Not flying is Germany at the mo so that is worrying but they may fly tomorrow fingers crossed. I heard the same about volcano two but the scientists said it was incredibly quiet near that one and no shaking or rumbling so it might go off too but not within a fortnight or so. Mind you it has done this follow up every time the other volcano went bang. I wonder how good these people are at their job and have things crossed that they are right.

Not as confident today as I was yesterday. OK so some northern airports have been open (if briefly) today but it's all doom and gloom on the news. Be interesting to see if the long haul BA flights which have set off from their destinations are allowed to land at Heathrow/Gatwick or if they are diverted elsewhere....Madrid maybe!!! Barbara, so glad to hear that the Primulas have come through for you. Been thinking about that lately as mine are flowering their socks off too. As for the other Volcano....who knows? It could erupt in days, weeks, Months or even years as a result of this one going boom. Do you think Cyprus in November would be nice.............

Well talk about a turnaround, everything is supposed to be back to normal, and individual airlines are being allowed to make up their own minds about allowing flights to take off, so Ruthie you will go to the ball. ;D and Dutchy you will be getting a BIG bag of dirty washing. ;D

news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/england/8633650.stmIt's on the main BBC news atm that it's all systems go. Fingers crossed it all gets back to normal and doesn't change again as I'm due to fly to Portugal on Saturday. Those poor people who have been stuck away from home and the whole knock on of this is horendous.
