Veggies growing in straight lines are all well and good but a bit of colour certainly lifts that part of the garden. I've been growing flowers along side my veggies for a number of years and love to hear the bees buzzing. This years flowers are Agastache Calendula Dahlias Lavender Clematis Sweetpeas Echinacea Aqualegia Glads Poppies Verbascum Crocosmia Foxgloves Sweet William Alliums Hollyhocks Sunflowers Marigolds And right in the middle is a perennial bed full to overflowing What are you growing with your veggies ?

Weeds probably ;D
3 of my little veg plots have a flower border at one end so they are in close proximity to a variety of perennials and annuals. And the bigger one down the bottom of the garden has clematis and sweetpeas growing up the arch which straddles the pebble path at the top end.

I tried sunflowers with sweetcorn last year but don't really have enough space to do that combination justice. The sunflowers took over a bit! This year I have plans for nasturtium in amongst the leeks and I have 2 clems at the back of my strawberry bed. Will have to give this more thought. I like flowers up at the lottie too.

As my veg garden is purely containerised I tend to have a few peppers between the perennials etc. Actually a way of getting more veg without my OH going mad that I am getting more compost.

I have never tried growing flowers with my veggies as I didnt want to attract any unwanted nasties, I know that Nasturtiums attract Black fly but I'm always afraid they will go on the veggies so I have never bothered, but they do look nice in your pic's ladies.

I grow all my veg in pots so it doesn't concern me but those marigolds look good among the veg... My nasturtiums attracted so many caterpillars that I never bothered again...

I love to see flowers up at the allotment, the 1st bed I dug has been given to the tulips and already have planted the following. Geranium Johnstons Blue, Cornflowers, Sunflower, Sweet william, seeds sown for next year, Sweetpea, Nasturtium, and have sown seeds for Morning Glory. I intend to have more

We were watching the dvd of Geoff Hamilton's Ornamental Kitchen Garden last night and he was tucking veg in amongst the flowers wherever there was a space.

The veg that don't mind shade are the most successful ones. I have Perennials at MssK and anual flowers and the veg in between all last year. Onions can't make it though lettuce did work well. Carrots fairly ok. Caulis needed more space than they got. Beans are fine. Broad beans even in shady border. Although I am trying to keep more veg in one space now as it makes harvesting ( where in the border did I put the carrots dmn ) and caring for the veg easier.

I suppose to be quite fair a lot of my plants are left overs that I didn't want to throw away I just add them to the ends of the beds or on the corners. I have a space at the back of the plot where everything else ends up

I sowed some marigold seeds the other week, they are just shooting up now and will plant them in round the edge of my raised beds, but that is about it so far...

I've been going through seeds this week and finding pkts of annual seeds that I've not sown previous years and thought about this thread. I did sow SP's last year along the wire fence that stops the chickens getting on the veg bed but might just scatter a few bits and bobs around in the bed this year. Anyone else ? ;D

I'm going to do nasturtiums amongst the leeks like last year and I'm wondering about growing globe artichokes in amongst the border plants.

They're lovely structural plants Jasmine. I'll be growing marigolds for the allotment and nasturtium too. Last year I had sweetwilliamand nasturtium along the edges of one of the beds I was growing peas in.

Slightly different but along the same lines I've got 2 beds of daffodils in amongst my veggies - the idea is that they will be for cutting. I wondered about planting gladiolas in with them so they can be for cutting in the summer.

I will be trying nasturtiums as well as the french marigolds in amongst the veg this year. I'm starting them off in pots and will pop them into the bed in any gaps. I also grow herbs in with the veg, thyme, oregano and lavender attract pollinators and look prett too...

Jasmine I remember your daffs last year. I'll be growing sweetpea at the allotment as well this year as I did last year. I just don't have room in my garden for everything. Now I'm thinking of it I grew Sunflowers and Tithonia there last year. ;D

Can's say I'm convinced myself, but they are a nice addition to a summer salad (the nasturtiums, not the black fly)

Nicandra will go in against white fly so near the cabages or even in the bed. Marigold yes Nasturtium too but at the back where it can go walkabout. I'll get more going and in the perennial veg beds I will get some flowers in too though I would like some advise on what to grow with Asparagus ( if they survived the winter )
