Oh wow FB, they are great. I just love hollyhocks, they and laurels were the first plants I saw as a toddler. We lived in a rented flat in a Victorian house and the jungle/garden seemed to be all hollyhocks and laurels. They make me feel about 2yrs old again. I really must grow some next year Do you have to spray yours against mildew or whatever it is they suffer from?

Not fed them FB What are you saying I was reading about hollyhocks last night and how they are best treated as annuals to avoid hollyhock rust - that is obviously not the case with yours FB - they look gorgeous every year.

Oh FB they look great! I've got one plant (the single black flowered one) this year after not growing them for many years because of the rust. This one has rust on all but the newest leaves but it's grown 4 big and 2 small flowering stems 6 foot high and counting so I guess they manage despite the rust.

Beautiful pic there FB mine have flowers coming on but it will be for another few weeks before I see them. LG if I can grow them up here in the hills and after last years very wet summer (when they did flower) then you should be able to grow them where you are, mine suffer from the rust but I just cut the leaves off and throw them on the muck heap and not the compost ;D

Glad the message got through eventually FB ;D I've found a place for hollyhocks next year - against a wall, south facing - now, all I need are the plants. Is it best to buy plants or can you grow them from seeds?

Carol it's more that they would be very exposed here than wet to be honest. It's like a wind tunnel at times and I've already lost some sunflowers, Hollyhocks would go the same way I fear. Would love to give it a try next year 'tho.

Here's one of my hollyhocks I grew from seed. It took over two years to flower - I thought it was a weed but nurtured it just in case. They flowered last year and now they are beginning to flower again
