All trainee teachers in the 60's had to do a 12 month course in English, Maths and RI and had to pass them too. Ah the days of Basic English, Basic Maths and Basic God!

1988 Education Act introduced it as a compulsory exam. I reckon the whole issue of Religious Education in schools was derived from the 'political' pressures of the Church to do so, as some of the early providers of learning to the 'lower classes' prior to the establishment of state schools were under religious orders. Even in my early school years a few of our teachers were nuns. Most small schools sat under a dedicated 'religious' umbrella, I attended C of E schools up until I went to Grammar School, and it was only then that I mixed with children from other faiths. One of my lasting memories from those years was that the Catholic kids didn't have to attend morning service & assembly! I got my maths O level first go, it was my favourite subject x Tig

Gosh, ages ago...I'd only just started teaching then. I wondered if it was to create greater tolerance

I didn't OB - I trained from 1966 to 1969 and I didn't do any of those subjects. I trained at Goldsmiths College ( part of London University) and graduated, being able to teach children from 3yrs to 11yrs, and a further certificate which enabled me to teach English ( my subject) up to pre GCE/GCSE (14yrs). I loved arithmetic Tig, but didn't like the periforal bits of Maths ......... hated science too!!!
