I would say that yours are probably Rocket, SO as I grew a few Charlotte and the flesh is a slightly more yellowy colour.

Well done Snowy they look yummy. I grew Charlotte too and they look more yellow than yours do so I'd agree and say yours must be Rocket.

Right!!!!!! a question for you all, I can't find anything about storing spuds, what is the best way to do it, we have lots , are we ok to leave them till we need them, and when we do dig them out will they be alright in a plastic dustbin or do they need a paper sack ?.

Post by farmersboy on Aug 22, 2013 10:10:06 GMT
I store mine in paper sacks,in my shed Barbara, and throw some old sacks or fleece over them when sharp frosts are forcast, but take them off in a mild spell.i was still eating my last years crop this June, they had kept very well
Only dig up to store if the skins are set,ie cant be rubbed off with fingers
You can dig up as needed till frosts are forcast, then dig them all up

Barbara,do you know a nice friendly chipy or greengrocer, they buy spuds from farmers in paper bags, they may give you some that are not torn,or as i do,get them from a farmer who i know,i used to work for him.

I have asked my Daughter to ask the farmer near her pub if he has any, Thanks FB, the local greengrocers only sell in bulk.

I keep my potaotes in a black pillowcase and keep them in the cloakroom. I'd say so long as they're dry and cool and free from light they'll be grand Barbara.

Got a question for all you potato growers....
I have had a problem with my spuds in that the green top is so large that it flops over and causes a) a mess and b) there just isn't room to get past. I get a good harvest so I can only assume it is because they are in tubs..
I have just watched Alan Titchmarsh and he was talking about Kitchen Gardens and said that spud green was always cut off at some point to stop the danger of blight. I had decided to not do spuds next year simply because of the lack of room/mess but if I can cut the tops back at some point it might work.
However, by cutting back, isn't this going to put the energy into the tops growing back and not into forming spuds or doesn't it work like this?? Or can I cut the tops back bit by bit for example - just to keep them under control??
