I am thinking of getting a Kindle. I have been looking at them on Amazon and am now confused. They seem complicated to set up - you need WiFi access and it seems complicated to download books ( USB pots and dropping in files) I am beginning to wonder if it'd be worth the effort, or, if in fact it would all be beyond me and my capabilities Would be interested in any thought you might have

I've not bought anything for my Kindle for months Auricula, it's a good thing I checked before I answered you i221.photobucket.com/albums/dd161/GWDAdmin1/Smilies/Default/rolleyes.gif 'cause they've changed it. It used to be that if your Kindle was plugged into the USB port (same as if you were charging it up) any books you had bought were automatically downloaded as soon as you bought them or the next time you plugged in. Now it looks like you get a personal library on your Kindle page & you download anything you've bought from there. That's the same way that the Audio books work & that's a whole lot simpler than they've made it seem on the support page. I'm sure if you can tackle a Blackberry a Kindle will be like falling off a log i221.photobucket.com/albums/dd161/GWDAdmin1/Smilies/Default/smiley.gif

I recently got a kindle...from Amazon.....where else...lol......You can download books via the kindle, but all I do is browse the books (free ones in particular) on Amazon's site.....and "buy" via them.....they download them directly to my kindle....and you need an account with them....It doesn't need to be plugged in..this is where the wi-fi comes in...I think.....

Ah, that explains it. We don't have a laptop just 1 pc. Our walls are a foot thick and so the pc, hub, wiring etc is all n the study which is a modern extension......so......no WiFi Thanks Amber, but as you too have WiFi ( and Amazon say that's how it works ) perhaps I won't be able to use it

I don't think my 'gizmo' was expensive, Auricula - maybe you could investigate? Don't give up too soon.

It's easy. When you buy a book from Amazon it is automatically sent to your Kindle when youu switch it on. If you don't have wi-fi you need the 3G model which is a bit more expensive. If you download books from other sites (such as the Gutenberg project) you can then e-mail them to your Kindle. Mrs Bill and I love ours. Go for it.

Oh dear Dr Bill - I'm not in a 3G area I'm afraid They told me that when I got my Blackberry, they said it was no good getting a 3G phone in a 2G area No WiFi or 3G ( and only a Broadband speed of 2) so it looks like a Kindle is out Might explain why no one round here has one

I'm sure there must be some easy way to transfer books to a Kindle via USB though. As has already been said you can download them to your PC and use "Kindle for PC" to read them. This is a free download from Amazon.

Surely you don't need to be wireless or have 3G. Like with any gadget these days downloads are via a usb cable to your pc or via a download site to your pc and then a usb to your gadget No different to photos from your camera, music onto a PS3 or whatever the latest music gadgets are these days.

You can use a USB cable, as the link I gave says you can. It isn't complicated The video gives a step by step guide.
