evening everyone. It's been a while since I posted, but I have something to ask.. do any of you have bee boxes in your garden, and if so where could I buy one from? I tried to make one,but it obviously wasn't up to scratch... Many thanks

Hi Delbrass My OH had one for his birthday Its on the back fence. My daughter got it on the internet but I have seen them in the local GC. They are quite expensive for what they are, have you thought about using a pattern for a nesting box and filling it with bamboo canes - same principle. No visiting insects have taken up residence to date (since April 1st - OH doesn't let on thats his real birthday) but heres hoping ;D

The cheapest one I've see is on this site: www.gardenbird.com/gsechannel/static/index.cfm - it's just a plain bumble bee box (not one with little tubes) & costs £17.30. They also do one of the tube type ones for £22.40. Most of the others I've seen have been around £25-£30.

Isn't that a brilliant construction! I've been planning to make a smaller one for our wild garden at school but I'm going to put old school plimsolls, rolls of old used books, some of the really knackered lost property and other stuff to give an educational twist and have a bit of fun with the kids at school. I've no doubt eyebrows will be lifted but I shall print off LL's picture and show it as proof I've not lost the plot!

Rita,I'll soon have no room for any plants! I love watching the bees on the lavender and butterflies and moths on the buddleia(sp).Frogs and newts in the pond and the toad that made hubby jump a mile when he lifted some old paving slabs .To say nothing about the flock of starlings that take great delight in using my clean sheets as target practice...I wouldn't have it any other way

I keep a broken terracotta flowerpot, just a tiny one , under the hedge, I've just moved it to trim the ivy and it buzzed gently, I didnot look but it was a bumble bee sort of noise. I put some dry leaves round to keep it warm, but they might like to be cold.
