I have been looking for nicotiana seeds in the shops and can't seem to find them. I did see some in Focus but I passed them by cos I thought they were too expensive. I shall have to go back there as I've looked all over for them. My dad used to grow them from seed and give me the plants when they were ready to plant out.
Are they difficult to grow?

No not really...the seeds are very small though so don't cover them with soil and just cover the seed tray/pot with a sheet of glass or plastic.
There's loads of different varieties. Years ago when i started gardening, you could only get the big tall 'evening fragrance'. As gorgeous as it was, it grew to 4 feet tall so all the breeders produced dwarf varieties at the expense of their gorgeous scent.
However, some of the old varieties such as evening fragrance and sylvestris are making a big comeback....and long may it live.

PJ I've sown Nicotiana Affinis, they are Suttons and were £1.30. They are the 3ft white ones for the back of the border. Some of the others are more expensive, I went with these because I wanted white But you can get a mixed pack for £1.75 www.suttons.co.uk/pd_124745_Nicotiana_Evening_Fragrance_Mix_Seeds.htm#Just been and looked at mine in the GH and I only have about 4 seedling so will be sowing a few more.

I have grown them for a few years, like Andy says, just lightly sprinkle them on top of the already watered compost, it is easy to wash them down into the soil if you top water after they are sown x Tig

Thanks everybody for your advice on buying and sowing Nicotiana. I am not known for my patience as far as buying is concerned so I looked on ebay last night and bought the following seeds 50 seeds Heirloom Mixed for 99p 190 seeds Suttons Super Hybrid Mix for 99p + 45p postage So I will see how long it takes before I receive them. I have bought seeds on ebay before and the seeds arrived after about 4 days. Having read your posts again I fancy buying some more. Fancy the white sylvestris as Andy suggested. I now should have bought more last night! PJ

I have a few more showing signs of life today Polyanthus - Large flowering Mixed - five out of the eight I sowed are sprouting. Mecanopsis betonicifolia - didn't think I would do much good with these, but I can see two tiny seedlings I am soooo pleased - daft isn't it? Getting excited about a few seeds germinating x Tig

PJ I'll have plenty spare if you want some seedlings in a few weeks....you don't need many plants as they get huge. Sylvestris isn't really grown for its decorative value but more for its evening scent.

Has anyone grown Godetia "Lady in Blue" before. They germinated and lived for one day and that was it. The other Godetia varieties are all OK.
Does anyone have an idea what it could be.

RF, do you have any seeds left?? Since they are hardy annuals (in fact, the last time I grew them here I sowed them in situ the previous autumn) they might be happier in cooler conditions - what about sowing another batch and putting them in your mini-GH??? Mmmmm, I guess that doesn't explain why the other Godetia varieties are ok ... cheers ...

Yes I do have some seeds left over CC and although I have no idea why the others are still romping (quite literally) away, I will sow some more as soon as I can open the GH's - just a little too cold at the moment I feel.

I've only done a max of three loo tubes of each RF, so hopefully I can keep on top of it. Does seem rather a lot now I read it back though. I was hoping to keep a lot of the perennials potted for a year to beef them up a bit, so gawd knows where they will all go. If I could get out and do some gardening I wouldn't have had such a sowing frenzy! ;D

Thanks WT, I think I'm going to need it. In fact I've just sown a few more Poppy Hensol Violet Ragged Robin Corn Cockle Harebell [lost them all last year ] And I found I had three Paeony Tenuifolia [sp?] left, so I'm trying two more. One left...... No doubt there will be casualties. Hope not too many. Somebody stop me.....

I've sown quite a lot of different seeds this year too Jonah, bet the kids love it. I have only sown a few if they are perrenials but things like Cosmos and Stocks etc I've tried to keep to a max of 12 I did say tried ;D Tig I'm green with envy you have managed to get mecanopsis betonicifolia to germinate, how long did they take. Mine are outside in a half seed tray but they do have a prop cover on them and a stone to hold it on, I popped the tray on the raised bed at the back of the GH out of the way and nothing has happened yet They are the same as Himilayan Poppy aren't they
