Great though, isn't it ;D Hope you are keeping a diary Jonah, what germinates and how quickly (just to help if I try to grow some of them ) x Tig Erm....no diary. The only place I have listed them properly-ish is on here. I've been lucky to snatch the time to put them in pots, pushing my luck if I try to sit and write about them too. I will try though.

Jonah GWD has become my virtual diary too You could print this page with your post and just jot down when each of them start to show signs of life (just a suggestion ;D) Chuckles I was thrilled to see signs of life with the Himalayan Poppy seed, had one of my silly moments (proud new mum They were sown on the 29th Feb, very thinly into 1" fibrous modules and general purpose compost (didn't have any seed compo so they had to make do!) I originally put them in with all the other stuff I had sown with a plastic lid in my warmest windowsill, but after doing a bit more reading decided to just leave them on the table, out of direct sunlight, no lid. Misted the compo with a fine spray if it looked a bit dry. Then after doing a bit more research (in desperation) I put them in the fridge for 6 hours . First signs of life noted on 17th March, tiny tiny little things they are, still using fine spray on them. There are quite a few showing now, I just hope I can keep them going. Did you know that you are not supposed to let them flower in year one, otherwise they won't continue to grow? x Tig

So far I've only sewn some nicotine seeds.I've yet to do some nasturtiums, alysum, lobelia, salvias, french marigolds etc,the usual bedding plants. Might sew some more today as it's too we to do anything outside. I love being it the greenhouse when it's raining.

Nothing yet from the Euphorbia or Aquilegia , so they've just been banished into the cold garden; nothing yet from the Campsis . Sowed the purple-leaved Love-Lies-Bleeding yesterday in mini-GH; ideally, they should be sown in situ, but in the past S&S have munched most of the young ones, so this year I'll grow them on in pots until they are big and tough ;D ... cheers ...

I had to admit defeat a bit today. I keep running out of loo rolls and places to put them, so I bought a pack of peat pots and two gravel trays with prop lids that fitted so I can start some veg while I'm waiting to shift on the flowers. My SIL visited at the weekend. She runs a post office, and said she had spare free offer seeds from the front of mags that she would post to me. Just when I thought I had it slightly under control..... ;D

Hi Chuckles .... the second 'Chocolate Soldier' is poking a leaf above ground .... so it's probably worth while to persevere. Nothing like as vigorous as my other ones though, which have put on lots of growth ... cheers ... I'm really pleased you are having success CC, I'm not going to look at mine for a while but will mutter to them that their cousins in Ireland are being good little chocolate soldiers so they better get their fingers out and sprout ;D Mmmmmm ... Chuckles, their cousins in Ireland are now definitively dead little chocolate soldiers ...

I planted three lots of seeds 2 weeks ago. The Lobelia Sapphire Pendula I think in my usual slapdash way - planted too many! The Morning Glory grandpa otts looks like this (having transplanted into individual pots as they were getting quite big already - too early!! The Poppy Himalayan Blue has nothing to show for itself yet. PJ

I think I can see a few tiny green specks in the compost. I used proper seed compost, but I have them on a low table by the french doors and it gets loads of sun and I have put the seed try in a clear polythene bag. It may be getting too warm. Should I leave them as they are? PJ

I wanted to say well done to Tig for germinating all those meconopsis, and you too PJ if you have some showing. I have literally one germinated! They stay tiny forever. I'm hoping mine might suddenly start picking it up a bit! I might try a few more. The verbascum seemed to be moving very slowly, but they have suddenly started to up the pace.

Thanks Jonah, although I think 'all those' is a bit of an over-statement (I only have ten seedlings - even if that is ten more than I expected PJ I left mine uncovered, they are so tiny when they first come through they might collapse if it is too hot and humid?? First time I have tried growing them so it is a voyage of discovery for me too x Tig

Great reading up on this, and Jonah.... Wow. How do you manage, no please don't answer.
I have but a few things on the go but amongst them Quamoclit, cousin to the morning glory. It refuses to live without a platic bag over its ears. When I take it off the first leaves crumple immediately but after putting the bag back on it unfolds again.
Has any one been throught this before?

Mmmmm ... anyone ever grown Campsis Radicans from seed? Around how long do they take to germinate? They've been in around two weeks now and there is absolutely no sign of life at all They were sown on damp compost, with "propagator lid", and are in a pretty bright spot in the hall ... cheers ...

Godetia - Little Frills Mix Godetia - Lady in Blue Escholzia - Sun Shades Escholzia - Champagne and Roses Escholzia - Thai Silk Night Scented Stock - Starlight Sensation Night Scented Stock - Evening Fragrance Mix Night Scented Stock - Ten Week Mixed
Apart from the Godetia - Lady in blue which I lost very early on , I have now lost all of the others as well. Some kind of fungus - I haven't tried to save the odd one - just binned all of them.
I am not sure what caused it as I had them a little on the dry side.
So - back to the drawing board - I do have some other seeds.

Oh Poor RF, that's awful. I wonder what happened. I'ts good that you still have other seeds to sow, fingers crossed all goes well with them. In gardening and especially in sowing seeds we can take nothing for granted. I've not been lucky with some of mine but I've resowed too.

Hi RF - You must be spitting, I'm so sorry! Just to be on the safe side, when you do re-sow you might try using a different compost ....

Must admit that I am a little fed up - I had got them well on the go - I was airing the prop each day (unheated), watering sparingly, no drastic change in temperature - everything seemed OK until this morning when I opened the lid and more than half were covered in a fur coat. I am also annoyed that I didn't take a photo but I just picked the lot up and threw them out.
Thanks for the tip on the compost CC - it is the same as I have used for everything else but who knows. I have checked all the other seeds trays and the losses there are what I would describe as "normal".
No wonder a garden is never finished is it...

I decided today to start again and I have sown Godetia - Little Frills Mix Godetia - Lady in Blue Escholzia - Sun Shades Escholzia - Champagne and Roses Escholzia - Thai Silk Night Scented Stock - Starlight Sensation Night Scented Stock - Evening Fragrance Mix Night Scented Stock - Ten Week Mixed plus Nasturtiums - Princess of India Godetia - Shamini - my thanks Shrub and Mesembryanthemum Livingstone Daisy - again thanks Galega Officinalis (pink) - thanks Jonah This time I decided to have a) new compost and b) choose a different method to bung carefully put the seeds in. My favourite implement was still in use but this time I sowed the seeds singularly and as my nails are a little long at the moment they kept disappearing underneath them so I licked the end of one of the prongs and then put the attached seed in it's place and with the rounded end I pushed them down. Great technique until I realised that some of the seeds weren't going were they should and I had an odd taste in my mouth......I do hope none are poisonous or that they start growing in my stomach.....however all the seeds have been sown!! Now fingers crossed that they don't go the same way as their predecessors. RF

Oh bgr RF that fungus killing off your newbies is not good at all. Good thing you had enough seeds to sow new ones. ;D Don't worry none are poisonnous as far as I know..... I could be wrong though
I only sowed edibbles today. Unless you would count Dille amongst the flowers. It is great in flower arrangements.

Some pics for those growing Nicotiana sylvestris as well. I call them my little rabbits as they do come up in their multiples. I thinned them today. This is what it looks like now, yes after thinning. I will thin again in some days. For the unbeleiving, these were pulled out.
