This is the story RF
12 years ago, i became garden manager to the largest municiple rock garden in the UK...and one of the biggest in Europe. I set about trying to get it looking good but i had a huge wall in front of me....my manager. Now my manager was a lovely bloke...he is extremely knowlegeable and a superb plants man. But he doesn't have a clue about man management or how to get the best out of his team. I used to see him once every 5-6 months.
Luckily, the big nobs seemed to recognise that the garden just wasn't "doing it" I was coming in each day and getting more and more depressed, i was getting no support, i was getting rollockings from the top dogs and i really didn't want to be there.
Then in Nov 2010, a new manager took over. He's a good friend of mine and we go back 30 years on the parks. I know where i stand with him and he tells me what he expects. he backs my judgement, he buys me plants, tools, mowers etc if i ask for them. He has the opinion that "it's not my money, if you want something, i'll do what i can to get it for you!
My new manager comes in 2 or 3 times a week for a look round and cup of tea with me and we discuss what's going on and how we can move the garden forward. I've never known him unhappy despite the high standards he demands.
So when i tell my boss that it might take several days to download the plant list, he just shrugs his shoulders and says he'll do what he can.
Life in the rockery has never been better and im absolutely loving life in my garden.

Sounds good Andy and the way it should be...I have known many people through the years that were fantastic bosses but pretty useless at other things or lousy bosses and great people...good that you have found the "good on both counts boss"...makes all the difference...
Let's face it, if we have to earn our keep after not winning the lottery and becoming millionaires, then hopefully it is a good and happy job..I am pleased for you Andy...still bloody envious at that plant list though !!

Some wonderful specimens there Andy, and it must be so rewarding to finally have a manager who listens and understands your goals and ambitions
I need to look some of the plants up, there are a few new ones for me

..still bloody envious at that plant list though !! RF This is the thing now though RF....my new boss knows his stuff but not on the scale i do. As a result, he backs my judgement and and if the garden looks awful, it's my gonads on the chopping block. So things just have to be right.

OK - so it's your head on the chopping block if things go wrong but a) he trusts you and knows that you are competent enough to give you a long lease..and b) if you really did mess up.... well it might be a little embarrassing but I bet you wouldn't lose your job or for that matter your gonads - haha!!!!
If you can manage to keep the gardens looking good in a damn awful gardening year like 2012 I don't think you need worry too much Andy...enjoy the trust that he has put in you...
Erm - what does the "garden manager in the largest municiple rock garden in the UK" think to people popping in and pinching cuttings then...<clearsthroatandwritesanotetoneversaywhenIamintheukagain>..

I really don't mind RF....as long as they ask me. I'll even help them take the cuttings and give them suggestions on how to keep them alive. What i hate is for the public to have a total disregard of the rules, go trampling all over the planted areas and think it's their god given right to help themselves.

Yes I can understand that...I do tend to go around in the autumn with some little scissors but I always make sure that I don't harm a plant...and I do ask if it is a cutting and not just seeds...
When I go to the open gardens here that is their first problem - hoards of "hobby gardeners" go and when the have left after the two days some of the plants look as tough they have been ravaged by rats.....

If I had a bigger garden, you might regret saying that i221.photobucket.com/albums/dd161/GWDAdmin1/Smilies/Default/wink.gif i221.photobucket.com/albums/dd161/GWDAdmin1/Smilies/Default/grin.gif As someone who sees the rock gardens in the flesh, I must tell you RF that he's being very modest (unlike on the Dahlia thread ) They are one of the first things that visitors see on their way in on the main route to the seafront and about 15-20 years ago they looked very tired & neglected. Now they are really stunning and getting more summer interest in them is really working. And to do all that with the help of just a few volunteers is outstanding, in real life it's hugeI'm now off to google a few plants on that list, so far I've only looked at the Echinacias, actually I may have to appear with my cutting bag in hand after all i221.photobucket.com/albums/dd161/GWDAdmin1/Smilies/Default/grin.gif Jillyx
