My freezer is a total mystery to me...not how it works but what is in it...
Why - easy, I am getting fed up of surprise meals...we had a wonderful pork roast today and I got stuff out for the weekend - guess what - pork and pork!! Only found out once it started to defrost...
If I freeze beans etc etc - no problem but meat dishes that get put into Tupperware type things do not get labelled...
Not because I can't be bothered but because I still haven't found a way that helps. Plastic I write on the plastic bag with an indelible pen but the labels that I can buy here either do not stick and I have a freezer full of fallen off labels and still don't know what I am going to eat or they stick so well that I can't get them off...
So - what do the rest of you do??

I like surprises RF. ;D
But if it's a joint of meat I put it in a box, I use old ice cream ones, and I put a note inside the box. you could have a colour code , say red for beef and green for lamb and pork could be blue, so bits of paper would help. my hubby one time thought we had 9 boxes of ice cream. ;D

I work on the same principle as you RF - there's nothing like a surprise!! My Mum used to freeze everything in Tupperware, then it got turned out into labelled and dated freezer bags. Then the Tupperware shaped frozen food stacked like bricks in the freezer. My Mum is very organised!!

Blimey Jas - your Mum is organized - I throw things in my chest freezer - no wonder I never find stuff but I must find a system for labelling everything..
Perhaps I can adapt your idea Barbara...certainly something to think about, thanks both!!

I've only got a fridge freezer, so I usually use freeze bags for everything that I can write on, as there is nothing that is very big. You have reminded me of a funny story though. A girl I used to work with was friends with a farmer & they bought 1/2 a pig, all butchered & cut into joints, but you had to take everything, head, trotters etc. They had guests for the weekend & after a rather boozy Saturday night, she got what she thought was the lovely leg joint she'd saved especially out of the freezer for Sunday lunch. When she came down in the morning the first thing she saw was an eye looking at her, from the bag, she'd got the head out by mistake i221.photobucket.com/albums/dd161/GWDAdmin1/Smilies/Default/grin.gif Think they went out for lunch. Jilly, great story! That would wake me up as well. We bought a beef quarter, glad they didn't give us the unwanted parts. Don't think I would store the head in my freezer ... In fact, if they sent the poor things head to look at me, I'd probably not be able to eat any of it. I have a small chest freezer, and use bags when I can to save space. But since I don't write on them, even then I find an occasional mystery. Just froze up part of a leftover lasagna last night that way, put four pieces in each bag.

I always put a piece of paper inside the bag saying whats in it, say I have a turkey steak left over (shop Bought) then I cut off the cooking instructions and write on the card what it is plus I have 3 freezers so I have to be organised at something ;D in the kitchen its a fridge freezer with 5 drawers and the 3rd drawer is for meat, 2nd and 4th drawers veggies, top drawer icecream etc and the bottom drawer contains shop bought things meat etc in the hall is a very large chest freezer thats where my bread supply is kept I buy 15 loaves at a time my lot can get through 1 1/2 loaves a day sometimes also I store our lambs in there along with chicken, chips and frozen lambs milk and the freezer down the yard has pork all cuts from our pigs as well as hollands pies for a quick lunch ;D and I still dont have enough room.

Had any surprise meals lately Rosefriend I write a brief description and the month and year on the plastic container or bag with a permenant marker. I put the year on because some stuff doesn't last as long as you think and a year can soon wizz by..........Like its nearly a year since you started this thread and I'm only just posting on it

I now put labels on everythng and use Aldi labels (they have them on offer once a year) which are great - stick well and come off immediately in water - the other labels I have been scratching off lids for months!! Just put was it is - never the date - check the amount of ice crystals for that - hahahaha!!!! RF
