Anyone heard of or eaten the Kumato?? It's a browny, dark greeny tom that I bought for the first time today.... www.kumato.com/en/Kumato.aspx....and it is supposed to have "the" taste of a true tomato. I have been in Google and also found some people on forums that say it is fantastic... Will try it later and if it really is what they say then I will get some seeds...let me know if anyone wants a try... Here are three of mine... RF

Well the taste test was well worth it... I thought the skin would be a little hard but it isn't - I would even use the work crisp, really good taste, refreshing, marvellous to cut...definitely worth a go to grow them... RF

They look like the black russian toms on the inside but a lot juicier we dont seem to get differant coloured toms in the shops here not sure why they taste better but you cant beat home grown for taste. Are you going to save seed from the toms RF?

So that's a "Thumbs up" for them then RF Well as you know I am a bit of a tomato freak and love trying out all sorts of toms but this one is something special...the blurb that I read yesterday in some of the forums is correct - it is a fantastic tomato... My stomach sank as I felt them - they are hard and hard toms are horrible but when I cut one the knife went through like butter but they are still firm to cut - you can get really thin slices..ideal sandwich toms, salad toms as well.. The taste is marvellous and the skin is crispy - weird expression for a tom but it is ....I am really impressed and I have grown and tried many many toms in my gardening days.. Carolann they are so juicy but don't wet bread - that sounds daft as well... Someone on a forum said that it would be a sacrilege to grill them - bet they are gorgeous though.. Yes I am taking seeds - I have 5 toms left and as you can see there are loads of seeds there... We could have a sort of mini trial ....at any rate a bit of fun growing them..people's taste differs so much.. If anyone wants seeds post here or just PM me with your address if I haven't already got it and I will send them a bit later on... RF

They remind me of Russian Black Toms 2 of which I was given to grow earlier this year in the GH. The colour inside and out is very similar although the Russian Black grew into Beef Toms.
The flavour was not nice and they had an unpleasant after-taste. The plants did not survive very long in the dust bin!! I was also growing Gardeners Delight and my usual Gourmet - excellent flavour for a mid size Tom. The Gardeners Delight were for the first time disappointing due to the pathetic summer in Cheshire. They mostly split, not due to irratic watering but next year I will go back to Sungold.

Good that we are all different Bigolob - I know people that love Back Russian toms and I have to say that I was very very impressed with the Kumato toms - infact I buy them each time I see them and have them for Christmas as well.. Rosefriend - my seeds germinated well and yesterday I potted up 3 seedlings- I did notice that some of the seedlings had green stems and some reddish stems so I have done 2 red and one green:)

Ah I only have green stemmed ones but when they were but small the seed leaves were slightly reddish. Looks like it is a see and compare plants later this tomato. Funny though unless self collected one would expect everything from a package to end up as the variety you bought. Oh and as we are talking toms. The advice going round is not to plant from windowsill into GH until the 1st of May due to the miserable weather we had. Something tells me mine are going in the GH today anyhow

The Kumato seeds were saved so might come up as anything Dutchy.. The Tomimaru (lovely tom btw) are saved but have a 99% chance that they work out well... Here is the Grow 2013 tom thread for all other toms... gardenworld.proboards.com/post/469242/thread
