Has anyone/does anyone grow Crocus sativus and if so have you ever used the saffron in cooking? I bought a bag of bulbs today at Wyevales. They are trying to busrt out of the packet as they flower in October/November apparently. The bulbs feel firm though and I'm going to plant the poor things tomorrow. I'm guessing the saffron has to have something done to it before you cook with it. They're a Mediterranean plant apparently so I'm guessing they like a dry and sunny planting position Any advice or tips welcome - thank you!

I bought some for the first time this year, they were planted ages ago - not a sign of them so far, I think it might have been too cold and wet, they've probably rotted! I did look up how to harvest and the instructions were you needed to pick the stigmas on the first day of full flowering and no later than mid-morning. Best picked in full sun (that isn't likely to happen here is it : , then dry them out in a warm place and store in a sealed container ready to use as required. x Tig

Thank you Tig! Not good news about the cold and wet - perhaps they'd be happier left in the packet! ;D

I've put them in the same pot as some species tulips so they can sit and have a bake in the summer...if they survive the winter!...and if we have a summer suitable for baking bulbs. There's a lot of 'ifs' there!
