Had a bit of a rummage under our fig this morning and noticed one of the lower branches has layered its self in the soil. I think it needs leaving a bit long before cutting from the main plant but should i shorten the long branch coming out, its almost 5ft long. Would you do that in the spring,- i'm a bit afraid of die back after its been cut off- or leave it until the new plant is severed from the old. Many thanks for any thoughts you might have, i can always eat a few more figs .

I'm no expert Florence, but I'd leave it growing for now, and prune it back when you decide to sever and replant it, later in spring, April perhaps?
My pruning book says to prune them in 'spring'

Thanks Tig, you've confirmed what i was thinking, altho i think i will cut off the long shoot this spring but leave it where it is for this year. Hopefully it will shoot out from the cut and give me a nice bushier little plant to lift next year. I've found it difficult to get fig cuttings to take so want to make the most of this one
