I have always been able to grow good Parsley and Chives in the ground but for the last few years I have failed miserably with them in tubs... I always buy small plants and I know that parsley shouldn't be grown in the same place each year but that isn't the fact in a tub...
So what am I doing wrong??

I don't know Rosefriend. I bought 2 supermarket chive pots last year, split them up and put them in a big pot and until yesterday they were just resprouting and looking like they may be getting ready for a new season. Today they have probably frozen solid Do you grow yours from seed? The supermarket ones here are so overcrowded I got lots of plants from one pot and I cut a lot off them last summer and they just kept going. I have no experience of parsley - sorry.

I've grown chives ok in pots, just in multipurpose compost. I have never grown parsley though.

I grow parsley in pots, I keep them on the kitchen windowsill, I also grow it in a bed at the lotty, but I let the leaves on that grow big and then dry them in the oven and then grate it into dried parsley for the winter cooking.
Chives I only get to grow at the lotty, sorry I can't help with that in pots. I also have spinach and cress on the kichen sill.

How much watering and feeding are you all doing because my Parsley rotted last year.....
I buy little plants from the farm shop - I wonder if chives from the supermarket would be better - even Parsley - at least the plants are bigger..

I have grown chives in a container for years, mine thrive on neglect. Never tried parsley in a pot, always just grown it in the ground.

Over the years I've found that chives do grow better in open ground, they like the room to bulk up, if you need to have them in a pot then the deeper and bigger the better. They do need splitting up from time to time.
I've not grown a lot of parsley, what tends to happen in our house is OH buys the pots from the supermarket and after the first use they get planted in a pot outside the back door. I can't say they flourish but we do get a a bit more from them this way.

Thanks all - I have just bought a pot of parsley and I bet I can get loads of plants out of it - same with chives. I think I will use then instead of buying the tiny tiny new plants from the farm shop.

I have grown parsley fine in window boxes. I actually did a lot better last year and I think the reason was that I had the Parsley and Chives in half shade and not full sun, and I had them in bigger pots - whatever the reason I had loads to freeze and used a lot for soups etc during the winter... I've tried so many times to grow chives from seed but never had any luck. On one of the vacant plots at the allotment, there's a clump of chives, it's been neglected now for years but always blooms and grows and gets bigger. Some seeds fell off it into my hand as I passed by and I'm going to try them this year, might have more luck. If not then I'll do as you're all doing and buy some supermarket ones and grow them on after splitting them.
I di somehow manage to grow parsley once a long time ago and it did really well in the pot for me. I'm not that keen on parsley 'tho and I've not grown it since. I do preferr the flat leaved variety.

Most herbs are mediterranean so they will appreciate lots of dry, sunny weather. Last year was great for herbs....my chives went mad but the year before when it was a wet summer was awful

LG why not pull a few of the neglected chives and use them to start your own plant.

My chives are in a smallish pot in the cold greenhouse. They look ok and I'll be using some tonight, so I'll see how they taste

Right I'll make it my mission next time I go there Rosefriend. I think I've read that chive clumps grow better if they're divided Ladygardener, so you'll be doing them a favour really . My Chives are mostly in the borders & gravel where they've self seeded over the years, but the ones that I've left that have self seeded into pots seem to do OK for a couple of years too. Never had much success with Parsley, but it's not one of the herbs that we use all that much so I haven't really worried.

Well thanks to theinsidegardener 's help last week I've now got some chives planted in one of the beds at the allotment. That sould leave the clumps left behind plenty of room to grow.
