Do you remember that I told you that EdF wanted to build another Nuclear Power Station at Hinkley Point here in West Somerset? Well, today the Secretary of State will announce that they can - and if he's agreed with all their proposals. The pub up in the village is going to be used for live broadcasts for BBC TV. I was asked to be interviewed, but I did it twice before on local radio and really didn't feel up to live TV, so I declined. The Government has always said they wouldn't subsidise Nuclear power, but as Centrica and China have both dropped out as EdF's financial partners, w all think that during the budget speech tomorrow, the Chancellor will announce proudly that they've agreed a way of doing it. Yes, I know the UK needs more power stations, and I'm not being a NIMBY, nor am I anti-nuclear. However, EdF has not responded to any of the local residents' concerns during the lengthy 'consultation' period, and we suspect that the Inspectorate won't have, either. All we wanted were concessions to make our lives bearable while the 'monstrosity' is built. Our village is becoming like a ghost-town, as people given up and sold their homes to EdF (for a lot less that market value!) The fight is almost over. When you see it on the TV today, please think of those of us whose lives will never be the same again. It's a very sad day today.

I am afraid Geranium that for millions in this world electricity comes out of a plug socket...how it gets there doesn't interest many these days... RF

I know, Rosefriend. It's only the poor local residents whose lives are blighted who will be sad today.

I wouldn't mind nuclear so much if they used Thorium-much safer, cheaper and doesn't remain toxic as long. But EDF should definitely be responding to any concerns/issues from the local residents. Especially when it's something as major as this

I thought of you Geranium when I saw the announcement on the news I'm with TT and think that there isn't enough investment in maximising the potential of safer alternatives. I am annoyed though that EDF want the Government to guarantee almost double the current cost of electricity as a 'bonus' for taking the project forward. That is holding the British public to ransom and I would be happy for David Cameron to tell EDF to get stuffed!! I'd rather use candles and not have access to the internet etc, the future generations will all be doomed to fuel poverty at this rate!

Tig, you're spot on there. EdF are holding a gun to the Government's head. They know the UK needs more electricity generation, and there are no other investors lined up, so what will the Govt. do? They'll pay EdF the huge amount of money they're asking for. Our electricity bills will soar! I read the massive report from the Inspectors last night - they're full of sympathy for local residents, and realise what it's doing and will do to our lives, but did they actually DO anything to help? No. I also watched the local news and was infuriated because the reporter only interviewed a group of people up in the village, 3 miles away from the site. They're not affected by noise or traffic. I know there were locals who were lined up to be interviewed, too! They just showed the people who 'didn't object' to the new build apart from one anti-nuclear man, so viewers will get the impression that all is hunky-dory.

Is there an e-petition or anything set up?

Been there, done that. It's all over once the Sec. of State has announced his decision - except the finances. No more on that yet, but keep an eye on the TV news - betcha the Government caves in and gives EdF the money they want.
