A while ago I asked how other people's philadelphus were doing but I have finally given up with 1 and dug it up as it was doing nothing. I have 3 and one is sprouting well. The other one that looked woeful has a few little sprouting twigs on it but generally doesn't look well! However, while I was tidying up, about 50cm away from the bush, is a healthy little what looks like a baby philadelphus. Do philadelphus sucker? One of my hydrangea Annabelle's also looks dead, but again, about 50 cm away from the dead stick looking shrub there is a baby hydrangea coming up. Do hydrangeas sucker?

I can answer part of my question myself - found this - it refers to Hydrangea Annabelle... Comments: Freely suckers; flowers on new growth so prune in early spring. Can't find anything about Philadelphus suckering though. Has anyone else got Annabelle and had it sucker? I guess the suckers will be just like the parent plant unlike rose suckers?

I've got Annabelle, had it donkey's years and have given bits to people time and time again - it has never had suckers though... I only have the dwarf Philadelphus"Sybilla" which is an absolute dream and so good that I bought another one last year and that also has never had suckers.... Maybe it is the German climate though ??!! Lets face it Budds don't even seed here !! RF

According to this site Annabelle doesn't sucker away from the base of the plant Jasmine! homeguides.sfgate.com/size-annabelle-hydrangeas-44466.htmlThere are quite a few references to Mock Orange suckering when I googled - it seems to be the un-named types that are the worst culprits from what I've read. The advice was to put the spade through them to stop it growing out of control. The suckers can be potted on and shared (sold) at the school fete

Hmm! Thanks for the link Tig. I guess all will be revealed when the baby hydrangea gets bigger! One of the 2 woeful looking philadelphuses was a reduced named shrub from the GC and one was a £1 from Poundland. They got muddled at one point and I didn't know which was which in the end. Perhaps it's my £1 plant that is suckering I'll dig the sucker up tomorrow...and sell it!

Never known any Philadelphus to sucker. They will put shoots up from the base but that's it. They will layer though...could that of been possible ?

I don't think my Philadelphus suckers, Jas, but my Spiraea billardii has this year! I shall have to deal with that. I hope I can dig the suckers up - and sell them...

Thanks andy and Geranium. I was wondering if it might have layered itself. The moles make such huge mounds of soil in the strangest places that little plants can almost disappear or be moved to one side and a shoot could have been covered. I'll dig both babies up and pot them up and see what happens.

It's definitely worth a try, Jasmine, I went to look at my Sorbaria 'Sem' to see if there were any babies I could pot up, and there's at least one, possibly two on the way. I can get £2 each for those if I can get them out safely. They grow quite fast once they're potted up.

...and they'll grow even faster if this weather bucks itself up won't they!

I'm only seeing your thread now Jasmine I've got a Philadelphus but have forgotten which one it is. I must have a look round and see if I have any suckers from it. I'd bought it from J. Parker years ago and this year is it's last chance. It's a lovely size and has good foliage in summer but I've only once had flowers. I know it flowers on last years growth so I'm hoping it will do well this year. If not, then it's coming out no matter how big a job it is.

I'm only leaving mine in Ladygardener because it has a clem growing through it so it can support that and no one will be able to see how useless it's actually being!
