Any thoughts on the quickest, cheapest, and easiest way to get rid of a tree stump?

Hi Larry - good to see you. There are multiple ways I suppose - depends on what you want to do with the area afterwards I would think. You can bore holes in the trunk and let rain rot the tree which would take years - same if you filled the holes with salt or acid which might not be advisable... You can try and dig it out or dig around it so that it can be sawn down below the surface and then cover up with earth again. You can get a digger in and get it out that way...or a tractor - that is going to be happening this week with our neighbours and the last time I saw it done the tractor ended up on two wheels and the clutch had burned through!! Or, here in Germany we can hire a Fraese which is a Cutter type thing..here is a pic.. That would be the cheapest way here is you only had that amount of stump left over...do they have anything like that in the States?? RF

Well I reckon the quickest and easiest way would be with a tree stump grinder if its a big stump, could be expensive to hire though. I've just had a look on You Tube and there are some videos of various grinders from ones that look like a lawn mower to attachments for a tractor. Might be an idea to see if you have a tree surgeon in your area who could help maybe.
Search for this one on Youtube 'JD 6930 & Tree stump grinding Rotor Speedy 100-130' its amazing to see and a real boys toy'

Thanks to both of you for the ideas. I live in a rental house, so I don't wish to invest a great deal of money for a home that isn't even my own property. But my wife and I have a couple of these tree stumps in the yard we wish to get rid of. I had also mentioned it to my father and he said I could probably pour hot charcoal into it and (over time) it would help eat away the stump, making easy removal. Again, thanks to both of you.
