I need a little help with what I can plant in this space.... I am sad to say that Rose Jasmine has gone - it wasn't happy and the last two winters had put it to the test - I think I could have saved it had I been ruthless and cut it back totally etc but OH was all for getting it out as whenever you walked past a thorn seemed to lunge out and grab you. Mostly OH but it is me mopping up the blood all the time!! There is a small rose at the front of that space. OH says he would like something "smelly" as it is by the terrace and just because something can climb it doesn't have to be a climber...a slender bush would look good there as well...but what...any ideas welcome please !! From the garden to the terrace.. From the Terrace.. RF

Ah well, Rosa Jasmine lives on here! It is a right old prickly rose though! How does Jasmine do for you Rosefriend? I find we get lots of glossy leaves and very few flowers but it may do better in your generally warmer summers.

I would love it Jasmine but I doubt it would cope with minus 20 and more, even with protection!! RF

You're a tricky one for suggestions Rosefriend. It's got to be a plant with its own scarf and overcoat!

Yep it has to be - and woolly mitts Jasmine - we are off to Olaf's tomorrow morning and I am hoping that he has some suggestions... OH would love a honeysuckle but they get terrible terribly woody at the bottom - as it is the terrace it would look awful !! RF

If you fancy a honeysuckle and want the most delightful scent I would go for lonicera japonica halliana. It is a vigourous grower, but it has no objections to being hacked back hard each spring, it is up to you to keep it under control, and flowers better on new growth. The scent is amazing and here it is evergreen. Not the biggest flowers but they start out white then turn a lemony yellow. If you can't get one, I can probably easily layer mine and send you a rooted cutting :-)

I'll report back later when we get back....a rooted cutting would be a lovely idea!! RF

What about Trachelospermum jasminoides. Evergreen, not rampant, lovely smell all summer, can be kept small

Well. we are back and I got something - totally different to all the idea as either Olaf didn't have it or, and this was the case a lot, things were not winter hard...a minimum of minus 15 is a must for here and in a minus +20 year then a lot of things die.. Going in OH saw a Spiraea arguta which he fell in love with, so we took that...even though I knew that we would have trouble finding a place for it.. Then I saw Euphorbia "Fireglow" which Olaf sold to me with the words" watch it it can be a thug"!! Then we started looing for something for the terrace and it was hard going for a while until Olaf suggested we try something completely different...erm - well we have. We are now the proud owners of a Vitalbeere (Schisandra chinensis) also known as the "Five flavour berry" as the berries " possess all five basic flavors: salty, sweet, sour, (spicy), and bitter"!! I suspect that it will be a fight between the blackbirds and ourselves as to who gets them first but Olaf said I had to give it a try as he has also got one for himself!! Just as we were leaving he also gave me a tomato plant (only one that I haven't tried from his sortiment) - not that I need anymore toms. All in all a good day but it took an hour and moving 3 plants to get the Spiraea in place!!!! RF

Well done Rosefriend - nice to try something completely different and like you say you are dealing with conditions which we don't have to get our heads round so well done to Olaf too for sorting you out...and adding to your tomato collection!!!

Those are lovely RF - I have Fireglow, it does spread out a little but I wouldn't say it was invasive (yet, mine is about 4 years old). Dies right back in winter and resprouts in spring.
The schisandra looks interesting, can't wait for your opinion on their taste, not sure I would fancy all five taste sensations in one go!

Oh no why do you think you've made a mistake Rosefriend? Spirea is so striking and I too have Fireglow, it's a wonderful Euphorbia, I've had a few runners but it's not so far invasive.

Well it's not so much the Spiraea althogh it hasn't really got enough room or the Fireglow but this new soopa doopa climber "Five flavour berry" - who knows it may be just the thing, but as I have said I bet there is a fight as to who gets the berries first - the birds or us!! Think positive - you might be able to share them.

Honestly I would'nt worry much about the Fireglow being a thug, it's so lovely and the runners can be pulled up if they become a bother. The five flavour berry, something very different, great if the birds like them 'tho especially if you and OH don't. If you do, you're an early riser so I bet you'll get to them if you want to. It'll be interesting to see how they do for you, Olaf would know what would be suitable would'nt he.

Think positive - you might be able to share them. Next door he has a wine that originally he was going to press - of course he is far too lazy for that, but the blackbirds still try and shoo my OH away - he does manage to get a few though - haha!!! Yes, Olaf has suggested some really good plants throughout the years.. RF
