My friend asked me a couple of weeks ago if I had any space at the lotty for her to grow some beetroots, she had sown the seeds at home and had around a dozen seedlings to plant out, well, they look more like sunflowers or that type of seedling, are there any beets that look like that, I've looked on Google and can't see anything other than the little red leave type.

Mine have always started off with smooth red stemmed and veined leaves getting greener as they grow. Are her seedling leaves hairy Barbara? Sunflowers are identifiable when young because of the cotylodons being shiny and oval.

The stems are hairy Tig, and about 6inches tall, not like any beet I've ever grown, what shall I tell her . I'll try to remember the camera tomorrow when I go down there.

They deffo don't sound right for beetroot Barbara, perhaps she's got her packets muddled up! Show her a beetroot seed when you next see her, they are very different from most other seeds, except perhaps chard.

She can't find them Chuckles, she knew what the seeds for beets were like so she deffinately sowed some, but what's happened to them in the meantime is a mystery, I don't think the sunflowers will have time to do their thing, do you ?

Well the second pic you posted looked like it may have had the beginings of a flower in there, as long as you nurture them theres no reason why they shouldn't do there thing

I'd say you still would have time for your beets to bloom into sunflowers Barbara. They could easily have flowers by the end of September. The beet seeds may have just rotted. I've had that happen lots of times before I started to germinate them between 2 damp sheets of kitchen roll.

I think the saga of the sunflower/beets is solved, Jans daughter bought a pot with seeds and soil in, you know the type like a pot noodle thingy ( technical term). well either the pot was wrongly labelled or Lyndsie got something mixed up, either way the sunflowers are coming on a treat.
