I was wondering who people tip at Christmas? The bin men? the post man? the paper boy? the milk man? Or do you not see any of the above on a regular basis. I normally give a tin of sweets or buscuits to the health centre, a bottle of wine to my Dr. a tin of biscuits to the chemist folk and money in a card to my post man to buy a few beers for himself.

No one. Our binmen are always different crews, we don't have a regular postman, ( our post can come anytime between 11am and 4pm as it's an "overflow round " apparently )we don't have papers or milk delivered and we clean our own windows

I'm the same with your list Auricula except for the post man, he's a regular guy He once locked my front door for me and brought my keys to a neighbour for safe keeping when I'd left them in the front door and gone to work.

Years ago we had the same people for Post, Dustbins etc but these days mostly are different every few days.
Papers are not delivered here in Germany, - having said that, in our area we get a regional paper delivered (have to pay) and had the same person for many many years. He stopped and over 2 years ago we got someone else, gave him a Tip for Xmas twice (the paper themselves give "thank you" notes out for them to use) and we were never thanked. Our neighbours and OH and I have now decided that he can take a running jump.
We have a local rag that is a freebie and two young lads used to bring that - they have now stopped so basically this year there is no-one....
I buy our hairdresser a present but that is all...

We seem to have a different crowd every week emptying our new bin boxes. Pretty much everyone in my street gets their windows done by the window cleaner every week without fail, I'm pretty sure they all leave them a tip for Christmas. It's just 2 men and they do most of the area where I live, 6 days a week or so. I never started and don't see the need to get the windows done every single week, they charge extra if they don't do them every week, must be because they have to rub harder. Rosefriend I'd have thought your paper boy would have had the manners to say thanks. I would'nt leave him any more either.

Well we don't have window cleaners here either - only large buildings are done by firms but I did see the other day a van go by offering a window cleaning service and later spoke to someone who used the firm - let me say that they get their windows cleaned outside every 6 months (!!!!) ad it costs a fortune. We also don't have paper boys/girls except for the freebie rag - for the regional paper it is a cantankerous man that runs around in wellies, winter and summer, talks to himself, wears glasses with the glass as thick as beer bottle bottoms, wears a miners hat with a light on...and is a very impolite bugga if you get the misfortune to talk to him!! We are often up at 5am in the summer and he brings the paper between 4am and 5am - if it is warm we have the front door open as well as the back and heaven help us if we wish him a friendly "Good morning "!! I think I might have to give that guy a tip Rosefriend, just for the sheer pleasure of seeing that outfit We don't tip anyone as we never see them, we're always at work, so I've no idea if we have regular post or bin men at all. I'd be very disinclined to tip the recycling crew anyway seeing as they manage to crush a different plant in the front garden every fortnight as they casually fling the recycling boxes back in the general direction of the house

Rosefriend if for some reason the window cleaners don't come one week then folk will go out and do the windows themselves.!! I can't be doing with all of that. I clean my windows when they're obviously grimy and not before. I know I let the side down but I'm not bothered. Sure the neighbours think I'm a bit batty anyhow, out at all times of the morning in the garden. I think I remember you mentioning that man before Rosefriend. Strange character. Jilly, our recycling men leave the boxes thrown all over the place as well. It must be in the job description.

I'd have to stand in the lane to catch the recycling lorry - they come and go far too fast! (Also very, very early : Our paper comes from the village shop, and our windows are cleaned every two months, so there isn't really anyone to tip. I might try and catch our postie, but he's always in a hurry and we never know when he's coming. The Sainsbury shopping is delivered by different drivers every time...so I wouldn't tip them. We don't have a milk delivery.

I tip the paper girl if I can catch her, and the bin men as we tend to have the same crews here. They pool what they get & share between them (or so the one that gets the fiver tells me )

We have the same posties and as I used to be one myself, I give them a tin of chocs. I never see the bin men to speak to and I've only started to see the same couriers in recent months.
