I am wondering if this is possible in January to take a semi ripe cutting or is it hard wood cutting of a honey suckle plant, and then maybe cover it with polythene, probably not, i have no idea,, as not done this before so need advise? if not when would be the best time to take cuttings please? This would not be for my balcony but for a planter next to a fence that im am now tending. Sorry i have no idea about cuttings, I am new to this

The easiest way to get a rooted cutting from honeysuckle is by layering it. That is find a shoot long enough to peg down into a pot of compost with some of the stem touching the soil surface (use a metal hairpin if you have one to hold it in place, otherwise it will spring back out again.) Within a few months it will have rooted. If you want to take cuttings then late spring/early summer is the best time to do it when the plant has started into growth. I find them incredibly easy to root, just a strong shoot about ten inches long (25cms) pushed into a pot of multi purpose compost, kept moist and out of direct sunlight will usually take off within 6 weeks.

Thank you so much, so you would not suggest doing this in January? i just thought it may well work with mild weather and maybe by putting a polythene top on the pot to keep warm? as i have done with a few cuttings of pinks. I just cannot wait to get some plants from cuttings im new to all of this. Thanks Tig.

If the plant you are taking cuttings from has plenty of growth on it won't hurt to try taking a cutting now. You are likely to be several degrees warmer than I am in the wilds of Staffordshire If it roots great, if not you can take some more later in the year.

wendya If the plant you are taking cuttings from has plenty of growth you may even find a length that has been laying/touching the ground and has already started to put down roots You then only need to cut it from the main plant and gently dig it out without disturbing the roots to much and pot it on.

It came to mind yesterday wendya when I was sweeping a few leaves off the path, my Akebia/chocolate vine which grows in a similar manner had some growth that had found its way onto the path and it had started to root in the pile of leaves. Its now potted up until I find a suitable place for it, I love plants for free Even if you don't find a bit that has actually rooted, check any growth that is laying on the ground and look near the leaf joints and you may find the start of roots growing.
