I know there's a sedum on the right hand side of the pic, and a hydrangea creeping in on the left hand side, but what are all the little green shoots in the muck? Is it just grass or weeds??? I'm sure I'll have sprinkled poppies in that area at some stage, but is there anything else worth saving?

Invasions of scutch grass, perhaps?

I see a couple of what could be poppy seeds there theinsidegardener. Why don't you dig up one of them, if there's a pea sized or smaller bulb thing on the end of it then it could be bird seed.

I'm afraid the green may well be what I call 'couch grass' - is that the same as 'scutch'? If it is, you'll need to dig out every last scrap of root - or it'll be back.

Agree with what Geranium has said about the couch grass There are a couple of seedlings of something there, they would be more recognisable when they have grown thier true leaves. I'd leave them for now and if they are something you want to keep remove them and then tackle the couch grass. Couch grass is a thug and will literally grow through the stems and roots of the Sedum, you do have to remove every last scrap of it to iradicate it. It also looks to me like there several bits of couch grass root laying on the surface of the bed, its very easy to recognise. There is a lump of soil just below and to the right of the Hydrangia to the right of that is a length of root.

eek, thanks everyone. I thought as much, I was going to dig up that area anyway, so that's given me even more incentive.

I just spotted a baby Goose-grass plant too - maybe you call it 'Cleavers'? Top middle of the photo amongst the grass. That needs to go too, before it grows up!

Thanks Geranium, is that the sticky stuff? I always think we get a lot of weeds because the house next door is rented and they don't maintain the garden much, they creep under the fence. I think we'll have to invest in some more ground cover plants this year to try and fight them off.
