What a useful link Ladygardener. I have a little book that does botanical names phonetically but it is quite limited on what plants are in there. I've had some surprises though on how you pronounce things!

Now it's an American site Jasmine and the 1st link for me was complicated so I've just been looking at the plant names rather than reading the rules behind them but yes, like you I've been very surprised too.

I have to admit that I go through hell here with the pronunciation of names as it is not only the names that are sometimes difficult to know how to pronounce but I have the added English/German problem...
For example in the English they say:
CLEM-a-tis and not clem-AT-is
but in German it is
clem-AT-is and not CLEM-a-tis
I do tend to write things down for Olaf these days so that he knows what I am on about !!

That's the one good thing about using the botanical name, rather than the local name Rosefriend is'nt it. At least everyone knows what we're all talking about.
