It's not a teasel is Ladygardener - has it got the start of little 'spines' up the back central rib of the leaf?

That was my first thought, too, Jasmine. Well - the birds love them if it is!

I think there was a Verbascum there last year so it might have self seeded Chuckles. The only way it could be Teasel as far as I know is if the birds dropped the seed there as there has'nt ever been any but you never know. Thanks for the thoughts everyone, at least nobody has identified them as weeds right away. We'll have to wait and see I think.

I can see all your pictures now Ladygardener! That bottom one looks like an arum lily - they grow here like wild fire and are quite hard to dig out as they have a very long root. I think 2 is a weed too - not sure what it is but it's quite hard to pull out of clay soil.

Arum Lily could be right Jasmine thanks. Weed could be right too.

No Jasmine they're in theinsidegardener garden but she could'nt get on to post them so she emailed them to me, hence the problems I had showing them. Yes I thought that was the kind you ment, are they the ones that have posionous red berries in the winter or is that something else.

That's the ones. I leave some of them down the side of the drive now as they're quite striking and I don't have to worry about the boys and berries. I don't know if anything actually eats the berries I'd love to know what that weed is - it starts as a little rosette, is low to the soil and then spreads off in all directions never getting very tall.

Yes they're very pretty, perhaps a bird ate one of the berries somewhere and dropped it into her garden. I'm rubbish with weed names.

It's very odd how things turn up - I find the odd bit of mare's tail in the garden every now and again but there is none in the vicinity that I have ever seen.

I never had a problem with mares tale at the allotment until last year Jasmine. The plot next to mine was taken over by a senior club and they got a lot of money spent to renovate it. They put down bark chippings and it must have had mares tale seeds or bits in it as it started to grow from their plot under the chippings into the bed next to the border. I took it right back to their plot and pulled it up. I've managed to keep it under control so far.

You've done well Ladygardener - that's another weed with roots that go down forever.
