A friend of mine has a young white crab tree which has flowered perfectly and overwintered well, and leaves came but are now looking a bit diseased and yellow mottled, and it doesn't look like it's thriving. Does anyone have any suggestions as to what she should do with it? She has given some tomato feed and watered it. This is its second summer.

It sounds like something has happened to the roots. Has she moved it recently? crab apple trees have a few common problems like other apple trees but I could'nt find any to match your description. Did she mention black spots at all?
