I hope someone can advise us on a lawn problem. Recently, we noticed that an area of the side garden lawn felt 'spongey' to walk on, and when OH mowed it, some of the turf came up, leaving bare patches. It looks as though the whole area of turf has come adrift from its roots. It's about 12' long by 6' wide. He daren't mow it again, or all the top grass would come away. I can't find any advice on the internet, or indeed any clue as to the problem, let alone what to do about it. Any ideas?

Didn't you have something like this before Geranium - wasn't it grubs that had eaten the roots and you got Nematodes to sort it out - or is this something totally different?? RF

I'm afraid Abi and I found out exactly what's wrong, Rosefriend - it's moles! We saw the ground moving when we went to look, although the mole didn't pop his head up. Where it (or they!) have come from, I have no idea, but what a nuisance. OH went off and bought a sonic device, which unfortunately was faulty, so he'll exchange it today. If that doesn't work, we'll hve to get a mole catcher in. What we used the nematodes for was chafer grubs, because the badgers and rooks were digging up the lawns to get them. That sorted that particular problem out, Rosefriend. I could have done without any more wild-life!

I knew there was something about grubs - that's bad enough, but Moles...oh blimey, that's not good...not easy to get rid of apparently either... owdboggy has had a right mess... RF

I'll have to ask him what he did, Rosefriend - we're bemused as to where it or they came from! I'd have preferred to contact the Mole Catcher, but OH says he read about the sonic device and it should work. I'm dubious.

I was chatting to Oldmoleskins some time ago about moles, and he gave in and got a mole catcher in the end - he couldn't get rid of them either - think OB was using traps though...in both cases they made a right mess of things... It's just as well we've finished our open days for the year, isn't it! It's not a happy prospect, Rosefriend - I do know they're very difficult to get rid of.

Must admit that I thought that too, at least you have done for the year - do so hope it doesn't take until the open days next year to sort them out...mind you it seems as though you have got things sussed out quickly... I remember OM saying that he was amazed as to how many there actually were and "lone" moles were just not the case... Fingers crossed Geranium and do keep us updated - it may help you to scream about it before you pull your hair out - hahaha !! RF

Feel for you Geranium they can make a right mess and its not easy to sort or put the mess right. Earlier in the week I was pottering about near the top of the garden around the potting table and heard something moving underneath it so I moved a few bits and ....... a mole in broad daylight.

Sorry to hear about moles. We have tried every remedy going over the years, none of them work. The sonic thing was hysterical. I put it in and the following morning there were mole hills all round it! We reckon they were having a disco to it. Firstly though, you have only got one mole. They are solitary animals except when breeding. Sad, as I prefer not to kill things, we have had to use the scissor traps. You need to find a run (not the feeding channels which are closer to the surface and only used once when the thing is worm hunting) to place the trap. Helps also to have a mole catching cat! Ours have had 5 moles so far this year.

Thanks, owdboggy - it was OH who wanted to try the sonic gadget first, but I feared we might have to get a Mole Catcher in. There is one who works in our area, so if/when the sonic thingy doesn't work, I shall insist. Doing it myself isn't an option, and Henry doesn't seem interested - but then, he isn't a cat!
