I have a damson merrywheather tree on a juliun rootstock. It produces masses of fruit every year , trouble is the skins never look good . I think it`s scab , hubby loves to lop all year round . ( I`ll post a pic later ). I picked a bucket full today and hardly found any with skins that were intact, though inside looks ok . I was wondering if they would still be good for making jam ? I hate to dump them as I do every year. I was given it as a present from some one who visits and would hate to chop it down but with the dissapointing fruit year after year and the suckers I have to deal with I`m very tempted .

They look exactly the same as our Shropshire damsons which we have picked today (32 kilos of them!). they make splendid jam. Just purée them and push the stuff through a sieve and that removes the stones and the skins for you.

pothead, Rosefriend, owdboggy, I've eaten lots of plums that look like those over many years and lived to tell the tale They probably wouldn't be found on for sale in the shops with blemishes. Enjoy your jam

Enjoy your jam Thats good to know chuckles . My granny used to make us lovely damson jam from the hedgerows when I was a kid . I saw some tiny but perfect ones at out local market on Tuesday but they would be quite pricey just for jam . So glad it`s ok to have a bash with my , not so perfect ones .

Pothead I have Victoria plum trees and lots of my plums are marked, I just peel them and use them for crumbles jams and purees, and best of all just plain eating. I can't see your picture BTW.

I can see the pic now, it was just a box before, those plums look just like mine, and lots of the others I've seen at the allotments.

I made damson jam with cinnamon and orange juice and peel , not to my taste but others loved it ( the orange was lovely with it but I will leave out the cinnamon next year ) . the last batch of damsons at the top of the tree were better . I put some in boiling water for a few mins and they peeled and destoned easily so didn`t need sieving . I put the very best in the freezer for a few nice winter pudding . I think the tree will stay after all

Good on you for keeping it pothead. It would have been a shame to get rid of a tree that is so prolific. I have a 30 odd years old Opal plum and it to has markings and it has little wriggly bggrs trouble but the good ones are such a delight ( that is all plums without the wriggly bits ) Making jam off them is the best thing I ever discovered but I do still have to think real hard on adding lemon juice as I tend to harvest when they are fully ripe and then the jam does not set properly without the aid of lemon juice. Mind you OH loves plum sauce in his Yoghurt
