I think most of us have Roses in our gardens and I was just wondering, which Rose has the stronges scent in your garden. It might be a rambler, climber, shrub or hedge and it does'nt matter what colour. I'd like perhaps one more Rose in my garden and was thinking of Gertrude Jekyll or the one Rosefriend had said was very strong and lovely but I can't remember it's name. I'm guessing now is one of the best and cheapest times to buy Roses, when they're bare rooted.

Think Gerty is one of the strongest Ladygardener, I've also got shrub rose called Buff Beauty that I find particularly strong, it's a good grower too. The other strong one is called Spirit of Freedom (very old rose type of smell) I wouldn't necessarily recommend it though as the flowers have got so many petals that one shower at the wrong time turns all the heads into soggy brown balls rolleyex The odd one is Grace that we both have, I bought it because the description was a heady sultry fragrance but no matter how hard I try I can't get anything from it at all, I suppose it does depend a bit on your nose.

No Jilly, I get very little if anything from Grace either, definately not sultry. rolleyex smilx I remember your Buff Beauty it's a lovely Rose too and you're right I would'nt go for Spirit of Freedom, we get too much rain for it I think. GJ is a lovely Rose but I must google it again to find out about it's disease resistance and how it likes to grow.

Of all the roses that I know I think Chartreuse de Parma - the smell of that is so wonderful...incredibly intensive of Mandarin, Citronella, Hyacinth und Lilac. Far more heady that Gertrud Jeykll, although that is such a wonderfully scented rose as well.. Suppose it all depends on your nose as Jilly, says Ladygardener, - I know anyone coming here and smelling both immediately say that Chartreuse de Parma is intoxicating...it is..it has won several prices for scent... Something tells me however, LG that you don't want to buy anymore roses at the moment ....yep definitely, definitely do not buy any more roses at the moment...absolutely terrible time to be buying roses in the UK!!!!

When I googled it I saw right away that I'd looked at it before. Do you have both of them? I do still have the 2 Rosa Rugosa to plant out in late winter by the rails at the bottom of the garden but I could fit one into the side border. Jenny is getting one of the Angelface and although I won't plant another in it's place, it would be nice to have a really heavily scented one. What do you mean for me not to buy any more roses! You're one to talk. cheesx

You're most likely right and then I can get it at bare rooted prices Sue. I won't be able to plant until the borders have died back anyhow.

Thank heavens - Marvellous Ladygardener, - those wild roses would possibly be wonderful at the allotment - some nasty thorns on things like that normally - might ward any unfriendly visitors away...I mean, only if you just happened to have be lacking in space, - for any reason, that is!!

No I really want the wild ones for the bottom of the garden, they might help keep cats from trying to stalk the little birds on the feeders by the fence. Plus I'd like to be able to smell them walking by or sitting in the garden. I'm going to take out a Jasmine that even when in bloom did'nt smell. I've had it years and I'll bet there are dozens of suckers to pull up. I think it might be a job for theinsidegardener to help with but not until the large Dahlia nearby are finished flowering.

Just a little update, I did manage to take out the Jasmine and bought both Gertrude Jekyll and Chartreuse de Parma and Buff Beauty have not regretted it. All smell wonderful in their own way although GJ is the strongest to my nose and puts out tons of flowers too. I also got Chandos Beauty which is another wonderfully scented Rose. I agree about Gertrude Jekyll and also Jude the Obscure, although it may be a bit big for some (4' x 4').

I think I have enough Roses for the moment Ron, I got a couple more Rosa Rugosa and another similar one called Hansa, oh and Margaret Merril and Mme Alfred Carriere. The next one on my list might be Munstead Wood but I don't have room for it at the moment. We'll see what dies over the winter.

Rhapsody in blue....delicious scent.
Also have Fragrant delight delight and absolutely fabulous....both which smell nice although the latter doesn't like the rain on its flowers or buds.

Ladygardener, Glad you have found room for Madame, she will not disappoint. Be sparing with the secateurs, unless you are selecting a single bloom for the small vase on the kitchen window sill. I have not joined in before as fragrance is both subjective and personal. If I had the room, sadly I do not, my "must have would be Maidens Blush ,Great In an ideal world in an island bed with a couple of Clems draped over her. I have made room for R.moschata, like Ali, she is always in my garden.

We'll see what dies over the winter Oh dear, Ladygardener, but I suppose that's life, or not as the case may be I have a whole list of fragrant roses I'd like to grow but I would need a bigger garden and I don't think I'll be moving again just yet

It would'nt last too long here then andy. fozzie, You're right, scent is very subjective and my sense of smell has changed a lot due to one thing and another. So much so that I can't smell at all many of the Lilies I used to love. Jilly, Rosefriend, Ron, andy, fozzie, andy, You've all given me the names of some beautiful Roses. Thank you.

Ladygardener , Jilly , Rosefriend , Ron , andy , fozzie , Although fragrance is subjective, it may be useful to have a guide for those who are interested. I've included some here that are very fragrant in my opinion but many are what I've found from searching the opinions of others. It's not exhaustive and you may well think of some I've not included. They are all also disease resistant. Some may not be available in the UK but as we are not all UK based I've included them anyway. As a guide they have all scored 7/10 or better in buyers' ratings for both fragrance and disease resistance. I'm a big fan of roses as most of you will know. When I moved to my present address I brought a lot with me but struggled to find space for them, then gave many away. You would think I'd have a bit of sense and leave things at that wouldn't you? Then I came back to this thread and was reminded of Chatreuse de Parma. After much deliberation (about 10 seconds) I decided to buy it. Then I noticed a beautiful, highly scented red rose on the same site called Catherine. I'll leave the rest to your imagination ...

Okay, I know the post is an old one, Rosefriend, but just thought I'd mention ... unless you mean too cold for the person rather than the rose, that is By far the biggest reason for newly planted roses dying is being too dry not too cold, especially if allowed to dry out before planting. As long as the ground isn't frozen, roses are resilient and will not mind a frosting. Just water in well.

It was the fact that I knew that LG's daughter was intending buying Ladygardener, Chartreuse de Parma on my recommendation and we didn't want her to buy one for herself and end up with two...hahahahahahaha!!!
