Rosefriend, Jilly, Geranium, Dutchy, andy, Thanks for that LG. Big drop in number for Starlings I see. I got a great photo of one the other day showing all those lovely blues and greens in the feathers, will pop it on wildlife thread when I get a chance.

I do like the Starlings, I have some who visit every day and I'd miss them if they were'nt there.

Think I might have all the missing starlings, it certainly feels like it when I've first put the food out egrix I love their antics getting the food that I try to save for the smaller birds.

Me too Jilly, they are like the mafia here, pushing the other birds away, and they land on the school roof opposite me in their hundreds.

We get to see the 'flocks' of starlings wheeling about above us, and what a sight it is! I can't remember the collective noun for starlings - is it a 'murmuration'?

I think it is Geranium, we get to see that sometimes at work if we're outside, when they're on there way to their roost on the old West Pier in Hove, there is a bar down there that has an outside seating area, where people go just to watch the starlings sweeping in over the sea front. I had a little robin following me everywhere in the garden yesterday, think he had babies to feed, he was having a good rootle around, but seeing as he was there to remind me, I did top up the meal worms on the bird table a couple of times for him too (big softie me egrix)

Which bird would you choose to be the UK 'symbol'? Some people opt for a robin, some say 'blackbird' or 'wren'. I think I'd vote for the robin.

A lark rising?
Out here starlings too are getting less but we did see an increase in birds of prey. All said and done, the starlings did come back to us and are working on their nests under our roof.
