Is it just that we record here as well as on the rspb site Rosefriend? Yes, that's all - we found it interesting to see what birds were in which parts of the UK Ladygardener..

I'd be up for doing it again, not that from previous experience I expect to record much, I've stopped doing the RSPB one as I'm sure the little b*****rs put the dates in their diary & all take off for the day as soon as the survey starts . Then they return as soon as it's over looking for food, I have to resort to being a little creative with my results

I seem to remember us doing something before and as you both say Rosefriend, Jilly, the birds hid until the time was up.

I wouldn't mind having a go, but the birds seem to be invisible atm. The bird food soon vanishes, though.

What are the rules? No specific date Dutchy - just when you have the time and then post your results on here... Rules none - just list what kind, and how many birds you get within an hour...

And if for example you're counting Starlings Dutchy Rosefriend then count the largest number that are there at one time. i.e. if it's 6 now and 15 mins later it's 8 then count the 8 not the 6. That's how the rspb do it anyhow.

Thanks for that Ladygardener, I had wondered - I don't know where my birds are - they must be in the forests etc - the winds have been so bad my feeders are still full after a week..

In contrast, my sunflower heart feeder that I filled up at the weekend is half way down already and it's a good size of container. The Goldfinches are bringing all their friends and family to feed at the moment but just you wait until we're doing the count.

I have two lady Pheasants now and again wandering in for a nibble of the far that fell down from the blue tit fat ball. Although the Robin is a competitor it is no match for those two fat ladies.
I bet those two won't be in when I have an hour for counting.

For the first time in 15 years, my favourite birds have arrived in the garden at work....and how !!!! Last week, around 60 to 70 Goldfinches have taken up residence and fly between 3 large Elms. They look like a flock of Starlings the way they twist and turn. This photo is a bit vague but there's a few in there

The only thing that I am getting in this wind is the Green Finches now and again - always 20-30 at one go..all the tits and other finches etc have disappeared at the moment... So many Goldfinches andy, - you are really lucky!!

The cold weather and it being January is bringing so many more birds into the garden. It's more important than ever to put out food for them as there's very little for them in the hedges.

We have been watching BB2 - gardening and Countryfile and the Green finches were coming down en masse - 37 at one point with some more at the back. I knocked on the window 4 times to get rid of them as the tits, finches and other birds just don't get a look in.
I have to laugh each time - the green finches fly off and all the others stay - as if they know that I am trying to help them!!
I was rewarded with a family of 6 long-tailed tits visiting - oh they are lovely birds - then a few minutes later my beloved Haw Finch!!

The greenfinch obviously told all their friends where your resturant is Rosefriend. Sounds like you have a great selection of birds visiting, long tailed tits are striking birds. There are a good many of them around where Jenny lives but they're few and far between here.

I last saw a pair of Greenfinches at work about 5 years ago...same as Chaffinches We get Grey Wagtails around the pond but i've never in 15 years, seen a pied Wagtail...yet there's loads of them in the park opposite !!! We are lucky enough to have a resident pair of Goldcrests though along with a large mixed colony of blue, great and long tail tits and a lot of wrens

Well done Rosefriend. Nuthatches even. Wow. Are you sure you do not feed them all too much? They are on a diet today Dutchy, - within a good day they have emptied 2 large feeders, 3 small fat balls, 2 bags of peanuts and a half a coconut full of seeds, plus the bird house. I saw the neighbour go and fill hers so they can go there for a couple of days !!

And you call that a diet? It is a sheer miracle they can still fly. My neighbours feed as well but they get all the Jackdaw for some reason.
