My friend is 50 soon and she's expressed a keen interest in growing some veggies and herbs in her smallish garden. She's asked me to help her get started so what better than to put together a "hamper" of useful gardening stuff for her birthday.
I have a loads of old wooden wallflower crates which i can line with green paper. And then i need to add bits....only cheapy stuff....i might find an old trowel and hand fork in the van, i've got a few packets of plastic labels lying around and some string.
What else ?

My first thought would be seeds of nice easy things that would grow well in said wooded crates.

andy, I agree with all of the above and perhaps a book or two that you've read and would be even happy to share with her. Like most gardeners I'm sure you've a load of them and she would no doubt find some of them that would appeal to her. You could always say you'd like them back at a later date after she's had a look at them. Also I don't know if you have any old gardening magazines around, I have loads and although I've read them all I do go through them all depending on what month it is. If you could make up some perlite and MP or some seed sowing compost she'd get everything off to a good start. You could start saving your containers/punnets that grapes/oranges come in and wash them and give those to her as well, they're brilliant for seeds. Don't forget this thread, you'll get lots of fun ideas there. gardenworld.proboards.com/thread/3747/recyling-garden-use

You've got pots and trays - how's about some plastic beakers as well - gives her the idea that they can also be used if you make a hole in the bottom...
Bit of fertilizer of some sort??
The dibber idea is good!!
Pair of cheapy scissors for string etc.. or an old knife!!
