Im having a problem with one of my downstairs planters, the one that gets all the sun is drying out so much, I dont know what to do for the best. This is the area that can get a lot of sun, can anyone tell me what plants do well annual or bedding that can do without much water? Its such a struggle for me to get the hose out as have to have hubby watching as so many cars pass by so needs 2 people to do it. Plants are dying due to lack of water so I need to think of plants that can take this now, the B&Q store have no advise they are clueless. The market that sells plants just say yes they will be fine, but they are not. I cant lay bark chippings on this bit as sowed cosmos 2 weeks ago, they dont seem to mind lack of water. It must get so hot hear, so before i buy more I need advise if anyone has any. .

Off the top of my head, pelargoniums might work as bedding, or for something more permanent how about Pinks or lavender, in fact most herbs should do well. Have you tried those water retaining granules in the compost, I don't bother, but then all my pots are close to the house so easy to water, someone else might know how well they work.

I did wonder about pinks as they seem to do well on rockeries Jilly, i have a geraniums and lavenders that also seem to take the soil. I have never used water retaining granules so that is a thought. I also wonder if when i plant something if to dig a hole then add small stones? before putting in plant? My stocks are sun bleached now and dead but will see what others think, as i have a big bear space now. Thanks Jilly

Begonias, Palargoniums, Lavender, Rosemary, Gazanias or Mesembryanthemum would do fine.
The pink and white ones look like dianthus

Some water retaining crystals mixed in with the compost about 6" down would help a bit, I put some in my summer bedding containers, but don't over-do it, the crystals are tiny but they swell a lot!!! There are lots of plants that will cope with drought conditions, including the stipa grasses which would add height & movement. My euphorbias cope well on neglect, you just need to be very careful of the sap as it is an irritant (never wipe you eyes when you've cut it!)

Thanks Tig, I will get some crystals, good to know how to do this. Stripa grass will look into as no idea what it is, but thanks

wendya I was going to suggest Begonias and Pelargonium but I see you've been well advised. I would'nt put stones into the bottom of the planting, there's no need and it might make the plants drain more and then they'd dry out quicker. Gazania would do well there too and provide really bright colour.

Ladygardener, Thanks i have Gazania already and they seem to do well there thanks for saying about the stones too. Now I have bergonias on my balcony so don't they need that much water, i may well just move them down if not
