I've got just 6 lilies growing in a border which I sprayed against lily beetle as I know it can be a problem in the area. As it was coming near to them flowering I stopped spraying because I didn't want to do harm to bees. I checked for beetles but didn't see anything. Within a fortnight they've been devastated. I still haven't seen a single red beetle though I've been looking, which leads me to wonder if it is the dreaded lily beetle. Can anyone confirm it from the photos?

Lily beetle damage usually starts off with the edges of the leaves being nibbled Ron, although I can see some leaf damage I am inclined to think that most of the flower damage is either slugs/snails or caterpillars. Could even be vine weevils, although they too tend to eat the leaves rather than the buds. What a shame, they were just about to flower.

What a mess Ron, - so sad - as Tig says they were just about to flower. I tend to agree with Tig, - it looks more like the S & S brigade or caterpillar - I suppose earwigs could also have had a munch!! If it had been the Lily Beetle I would have expected the leaves to have been more decimated plus a lot of "poo" everywhere..

Thanks Tig, Rosefriend, I thought it might be something else as I couldn't find any sign of the beetles. Glad to have it confirmed. It does give me hope though as I was thinking of growing them in a container next year. I can put a strip around the pots to stop slugs and snails getting up. I don't want to spray when the flowers form as bees taking the nectar would be harmed.

The reason that I ask is that I use a system spray for the Lily Beetle (helps a few others things) as soon as they emerge (twice in 2 weeks) and then never again...I add slug pellets when small but again I tend to find that the older they get the less juicy the Slugs find them - yours must be really juicy...mind you the caterpillars are the devils own this year..

Bayer Provado Ultimate Bug Killer. I think I've found the culprits, fat on the proceeds of crime! I've got some pellets, should have used them.

We've had so much rain lately the s & s brigade are decimating entire plants overnight in my garden if I've failed to scatter the pellets. Any I find get stomped on!

katey, Thankfully the flowers were past their best when it happened but a pigeon stripped them all off the stems and ate them. I've seen them do the same in spring with buds on an acer.

Pigeons..flying rats. I had bother with those pigeon look a like with half ring on the neck. I was getting a border filled with Tete - A - Tetes and one walked all over the compost after I planted...argeeeeeee! Bees come after the Honeydew that Aphids produce, I used to wonder why Bees was all over my main Acer, now I know. I also get Ants on the Acer. Sorry about the Lillies though Roney, Lillies are lovely. I tried The Fritilarea last year with great success.
