Just seen this spectacular plant in the garden centre. Anyone grow it outside in the UK ? Apparently, it's a small shrub from S. Africa but not sure if it's terribly hardy. It can also be used as a substitute for Cannabis !!!!! en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Leonotis_leonurus

I have grown it from seed. Mine has survived 3 winters although they have been fairly mild. It gets cut back to ground level by the cold and resprouts late spring. It hasn't flowered at all as I don't think that the autumn weather has been warm enough for it here. The foliage has a distinctive odour but I haven't tried 'using' it! Just braved the rain to take a pic but the light is so low the flash went off!

Well the garden has a lemon verbena which has been there for 15 years and they can be tender. I've just planted an Albezia too.
Might risk it in a sheltered place.
Thank you ladies

andy, Rosefriend, Tig, Love this plant, I grew it in the garden in Portugal where we used to holiday and always fancied seeing it grow with Verbena bonariensis. Found this from way back about hardiness Hello. A friend grew Leonitis from seed a few years ago. I remember its stem had four distinct sides (a bit like Verbena bonariensis) which helped us identify it when it re-emerged in the spring. It was hardy in north Essex. She may well have obtained the seed from the Hardy Plant Society. Not sure if this is helpful, but I just remember the stems...

There is something bugging me about this plant from the word go...I know that I know something about it....the name is sooo familiar to me..haven't a clue why though. I have googled it and still can't work out what it is....

Going to give it a go in a sheltered spot and mulch the base with a very deep layer of dry leaves for the winter.
Thanks again
