Believe it or not I have never grown tomatoes before and haven't got much of an idea. I've bought 5 plants from eBay and received no planting instructions or advice with them. I know I can google tomato growing but with them being heritage would it be different? They are 'Lemon Plum', 'Tigerella', 'Orange Banana', 'Black Krim' and 'Pineapple'. I believe that Rosefriend is very knowledgeable ...

I believe that Rosefriend is very knowledgeable ... Hahahaha - yep - the Tomato Lady knows the odd thing about Heritage toms... Basically there is very little difference growing Hybrid tomatoes to Heritage tomatoes. Hybrid tomatoes are F1 and obviously bred for health, harvest, and taste..... Heritage tomatoes (people are still arguing about it) are tomatoes that have been handed down by generation etc. Whatever the description, Heritage tomatoes must be open pollinated - that is to say the seeds can be taken and used and will be true to the parent plant. Bit late to be planting tomatoes of any description and I would imagine that you will only get 2/3 trusses out of them before autumn...how big are they?? I know all of those varieties - Black Krim is one of the nicest toms that I know - Black, juicy with a wonderful tomatoey smokey taste - ideal with meat or salads... Pineapple is also a beef tom, red/yellow with a wonderful taste...fresh, rich and fruity. Lemon Plum is a Russian tom - not keen myself but good in a salad...tends to be a bit pithy.... Orange Banana is a paste tomato - great for drying or making sauces, - very fruity. Tigerella is an good oldie - normal size and red and yellow striped....super flavour.. Are these toms going in the garden Ron,?? Or tubs??

At the moment Rosefriend , they are in tubs but only small ones. I can transfer them to larger ones if needed.

At the moment Rosefriend , they are in tubs but only small ones. I can transfer them to larger ones if needed. They really are small - I doubt you will get much from them this year unless we suddenly get the most fantastic summer for the next 2 months...however - stranger things happen at sea etc etc.. For those toms the ultimate tub is 20litres per plant - you will probably get away with 10 litres this year at this stage... Toms need, sun (6 hours a day if poss), regular watering, good compost, good fertilizer, as little water from above as possible (cover of some sort if at all possible) strong cane and a prayer sent up to the Tomato God at regular intervals!! Side shoots should be taken off, especially at this time of the year. Tomatoes are self pollinating but a little shake per day does no harm at all and should be automatic as soon as you see them!! Tomorite or equivalent is a great fertilizer but after about 3/4 weeks - those toms need good roots before they get too much power...otherwise they will be full of leaves and no flowers... Possibly loads of other things but ask when and if....we can move this to the Veg and Fruit board if you wish - would be easier to find in the future perhaps ?? Also - I'll send you seeds next year - you can sow half a dozen of your own, plus some pepper seeds if you want as well..

Typical of me, I'm afraid, spur of the moment decision to buy something without thinking. You know how I tend to plan things out, that probably developed because of impulse buying. Didn't do that this time though Will still grow them on but not expect too much maybe. Would be a good idea to move the post yes, and thanks for the offer of seeds, very much appreciated. Been looking at more traditional sites rather than eBay and tomatoes are unavailable as they are out of season. Should have done that before.

Considering the weather and that I have a lot to do, I think I may sacrifice the tomato plants. They were very cheap probably because they were out of season, and I don't want to spend a lot of time and effort and get no fruit. I'll try again next year and at the right time. Rosefriend , you will probably hate to see tomato plants go to waste but I think it makes sense.

I think you could be right as looking at them Ron, I would be surprised if you could even get ripe beef toms....could do but the weather would have to be perfect... Have a thunk for next year as to where some toms/peppers could go and what you would prefer (cherries/normal/beef) and I will get seeds to you...

Ron, the man on the next allotment to me has just planted out tomato plants about the same size as yours, if you have the space you might leave them in, and then you might learn a few tricks before you sow some next year. just a thought.

I need the pots that they're in but I'll transplant them into the ground when I've got some netting up. You never know ...

You do never know - have a go Ron, - only thing is that Hybrids will grow quicker and better than heirlooms so on Allotments etc I bet they are going for things like Moneymaker etc..normal F1 Hybrids... Be interesting to see what happens...

May as well let them have the tomato plants, they have been doing me a favour eating the grass where it has started growing back. If they would only stick to grass I'd be happy
