Second thread here - second question of many (sorry) I love the look of aubretia tumbling and have a couple of spots they'd look good - but 2 failures so far. My soil gets very wet in winter and they just rot away despite attempting to protect the necks. My question - if I were to put them in pots with a gritty mix (to be determined) with lots of sharp stone at the bottom of the planting hole, then sit the pot in the hole, and mulch with slate, will they survive living in a pot ? Do the roots need more room than a 5 inch by 5 inch pot allows ? Thanks

You would be better doing something about the drainage where you want to plant. Dig it out, say about a foot by a foot deep and back fill with half and half soil and grit, Plant in that and then mulch with your slate chippings. Having said that the Aubrieta here grows on the flat in the gravel garden and gets walked all over when we go to the water butts. It thrives and self seeds all over the place.

Thanks for the answer. I guess I've got some serious digging to do sooner than I was planning Makes sense to do it now though, now I'm back into gardening. No point buying things that won't make it BTW - are you the owdboggy I saw on a post back in 2010 on the GrowsOnYou site ? I was just googling how to propagate phlox 'amazing grace' and came across that post

Lol I guess you can't have too many owdboggys in the garden Following on from the advice about rooting phlox - is it 2 inches of tip placed in the medium ?

Yes, that should do it, about half into the medium and half out.
