Which Grass Cutting Shears? Sounds like a magazine title doesn't it, but enough of whimsy. We have umpteen pairs of shears at home all of which have had some experience of cutting grass but none of which do it very well. Jack of all trades but master of none etc. So before embarking on the trail of yet another new pair of lawn edging shears I wondered if anyone had any recommendations? I don't mind getting down on my knees (Language! ) so it doesn't have to be the offset long handled ones, just something that will actually cut grass without tearing it out by the roots or just folding it over. All suggestions gratefully received.

I no longer have any grass so I'm not much help in this area. When I did have 'lawns' I got the best edges with the half moon cutter, and used scissors as I never found any of the shears were brilliant, they just didn't stay sharp enough. Perhaps a good sharpening stone would hone those you already have?

Thanks Tig,
Yes I have a half-moon edger and bizarrely have cut large sections of lawn edges with an old pair of kitchen scissors. At least I'm not the only one. I also still have an old mains electric strimmer but was never very keen on that around flower borders as it is rather indiscriminate, to say the least.

I've got to say that some of my best bladed/ power tools have come from aldi or lidl. For quality and price. Unfortunately it's only when they stock them. I've found the secret (for me) is keeping everything sharp. I use varying grades of wet and dry paper with a liberal spray of window cleaner to lubricate. The little scars on my fingers are a reminder of how good an edge you can get - a sanding block can stop this
