Cannas are listed as half hardy. I have looked online for info and it seems they will survive US zones 7 to 11 if cut right back in Autumn. The UK equivalent for the Midlands is zone 9 so it seems safe to do that. Has anyone had any problems with overwintering Cannas? The particular plant is Canna tropicanna. They have to be planted quite deeply so if it needs lifting I'd probably put it in a large pot.

I keep mine in pots Ron, as you know I'm on the South Coast so I might get away with a lot more than others further North. In the past I've moved them into the porch, after cutting them back, but this year I had an extra growhouse and have put them in there. I checked them a couple of days ago and they were starting to put up new shoots.

Thanks, Jilly. I would prefer them (I have 3 coming) in the ground, as they'd be easier to look after and pots might be heavy to move, but I'll use them if necessary. At least one site suggests they would be okay outside, but with them being described as hald hardy I'm unsure. Perhaps someone will have had experience.

I'd treat them as you would a Dahlia. If you can get away with it, they will be fine in the ground but i'd certainly mulch them with a good 6-10" of dry mulch.
Cannas love rich loamy soil...similar to Bananas. They will romp if you can give them this. Well drained soil is a must or they will rot.
I like to lift mine each year and dry them off and start them into growth around Febuary with a bit of gentle bottom heat. I find you get much bigger, earlier plants this way and you can chop them up and propagate them easily.
Be careful with snails and slugs....the little blighters eat the new tips before they emerge.
