Asking on behalf of my SIL....she has a slightly raised veg bed but half of it is in the shade....what if any veg can be grown in the shady half? It doesn't get any sun as far as I am aware ....

Dutchy, Missredhead, I agree, most of my broad beans are grown in shade. Rhubarb will grow in semi shade.

I plan to divide it this year. We have a section on the north side of the house that gets mainly filtered light. Nit sure that ut gets much if any direct sunlight, but its not as dark as the area by the creek. No trees are shadowing this area, just the shade from the house, but ti does have a light colored foundation to reflect some light. Do you think rhubarb might grow there?

I'm not sure blc, I can only speak to what I've tried myself but it would be worth a go.

I'm not sure blc, I can only speak to what I've tried myself but it would be worth a go. I'm apprehensive on it. The rhubarb didn't do that well at the old place and it was shaded by the privacy fence. Think I'll try and move the other plants so I can put the divided rhubarbs in that area. I have hostas and geraniums and a lily sitting there at present.

blc If it did not do well where it was you can most certainly risk a bit in your dappled shade. Do put one h. of a lot of manure under it though as it loves that. Mine did not do well and I had it down to truly very old plants so I put those on the compost heap and got new plants. Those got plenty of manure. Now here is the little surprise... The ones I binned started growing in my winter compost bin which has squash in during the summer. A shaded spot until things get above the sides of the bin. The squash does not mind but the Rhubarb grows in shade and... does not mind at all. They love it and grow fat. All I can think of is the amount of food at their feet as the reason for the growth. I most likely did not feed them well enough before and they sat slightly to deep in my winter-wet clay soil. My conclusion? Feed feed feed and as for shade, rhubarb is tough.

At our old house it was shaded by the fence and didn't get big. Here at thos place it has already doubles in size in two years and needs dividing. We are off to the nursery today to see what they have left on sale for the side of the house that gets the shade. Crossing my fingers we find something good!
