Hi, I've noticed that one of my plants has a nice collection of insects on the leaves. I've sprayed them with a soapy water mixture. Is there anything else I should do?

Just catching up @nazz, - looks like white fly to me, Tig, Ladygardener, Jilly et al ??!! Now as to what you can use - in Europe you can these sticky yellow strips that when you brush against the plant they fly up and stick to them...I personally would use a system spray but you have cats as well... I did see a trick the other day on FB/or was it here (?) - wrap sellotape around your hand and then brush/wipe the plant and you get the same effect as the yellow sticky strips... Anyone else please....??

That tip was on this weeks Gardeners World RF, the lady who was working as a volunteer in the walled garden had used cellotaped hands to catch white fly If the plant is not too big I would put the pot under a shower of cool water to help blast them off, especially the undersides of the foliage @nazz. If you first wrap a plastic bag over the pot and secure it round the stems with string it will stop the compost falling out and splashing everywhere. Then dry each leaf off with paper towels, checking for any signs of insect life as you go. The tell tale signs are sticky patches on the leaf surfaces, which can attract sooty mould. Check every few days for signs of further attack and repeat the process as necessary, otherwise resort to insecticide sprays suitable for houseplants and keep the cats away from it Check your other houseplants too, they may have started to spread to them.

Thanks for the advice. I've ordered plant-friendly bug killer online. Should be here today or tomorrow. In the meantime, I'll try to shower it and wipe it down with baby wipes. it's out in the communal hallway for the time being. Why do these things love the smallest plants with the most leaves? So difficult for my big hands

Sorry I'm late to this thread, @nazz, Rosefriend, Tig, I'd not use the yellow sticky tape as it can kill the good bugs as well as the white fly. When I've had something similar happen to something or other I was growing in my covered back, I took the advice from here and brought it outside properly and gave it a good soaking with just water, it worked, they like dry conditions. To prevent it happening again @nazz, I'd say to spray the foliage on a regular basis or even the air around it.

After a blast of insect killer, it looks like I've overdone it. There's a lot of dead/dying leaves but a few new leaves makes me optimistic it's going to survive

Good grief @nazz - erm...what did you spray it with?? I have no doubt it will live but it's certainly got a blasting. I would cut off all the dead stuff, or what you can anyway... Is it a bit dry perhaps??
Next question - what is it, - thought it looked a bit like a Rhodo or Azalee??

Did I mention that I'm not really a gardener? I've a long history of dead plants, unfortunately. I've taken all the dead branches and leaves off now. Spotted some hardy greenfly as well. It's looking pretty bare and the soil is kinda damp. Now I'm just taking one day at a time...

I've no idea what kind of plant it is other than a nearly dead one

Don't worry about not being a gardener - we have people on here that can ramble on about their plants using only the latin names, then people that use the "it's a blue/red/green plant" - all part of the fun...I'm somewhere in between I think...apart from having an abominable memory for names, which doesn't help a lot!! Are houseplants expensive in China - I mean, being a professional plant killer, does it affect your bank balance a lot - lol !!?
