Take a medium to large sized plastic pot and buy a drainage tray with a diameter that will fit about half way down it. The pot I used was 55cm wide at the top, 33cm wide at the bottom and 52cm high. The tray was 42cm wide. Make sure the pot is where you want it to go because it will be heavy. Add water to a level about where the tray will fit. Drill half a dozen holes in the tray then fit it securely inside the pot. Fill the top with compost as normal leaving a small gap to aid watering. . Plants will naturally produce specialized roots which will find their way down to the water. It also has the advantage that the weight will keep the pot more stable and less compost will be required.
