These can be a bit of a pain.
The last one we had was in 2004. I fitted a false ceiling to accommodate the spotlights my wife wanted. I did the electrics, the tiling, the decoration and fitted the laminate floor. We got a kitchen company to supply and fit the units and a plasterer to skim the ceiling.
Just the wallpapering to do here.
As there's just the two of us in this house since the kids left home well over twenty years ago, the kitchen has worn well. But fates conspire which could have necessitated a new kitchen.
Like when this boiler, around which the kitchen was fitted, needed replacing four years ago. The fridge/freezer packed up at the same time. Replacements available were either too short or too tall. So we settled on a taller one so I had to remove a small top cupboard to fit it and make a fillet to close the narrow space above it.
And we were left with this.
But a long period of doing DIY jobs in the house didn't bother me and now we have this. As with the previous boiler, I made a new "L shaped" tiled fillet that can be slid out, that hides the boiler's pipework. I had some spare cupboard handles from the original fitting.
The middle part of the bottom pelmet can be removed to allow the front of the boiler to swing down for servicing. I included a narrow cupboard for the instruction books for some of the appliances that she never can find.
A year ago she decided she needed another cupboard. "It can go on that little breakfast bar." I asked for it in the design as somewhere I could eat my breakfast in the morning and read my paper. But that never worked out for me as she always managed to put "stuff" on it.
As I'd sorted out the boiler, she assumed it would be an easier job.
The work was easy enough, sourcing the materials was the hardest part.
All the appliances in the old photos have either worn out or become "unfashionable" and been replaced.
The latest replacement is a new air fryer, which has to live here. More appliances in the big carousel in the corner.
It has to share this space over the dishwasher when in use.
The induction hob has to live on top of the microwave when not over the dishwasher.
So no new kitchen...yet!
